Hi All,
I decided to share an experiment with the Canon 135/f2. As background, a few months back, I purchased a Canon EF100-400 primarily to use as a wider range, longer reach telephoto for my Gfx100S. After I ordered the Fringer adapter for that purpose, I noticed another Fringer, the EF-Fx for a reasonable price here on FM. I hadn't occurred to me prior that adapting EF to Gfx was a "free" opportunity to try the same lenses on my X-T5. If nothing else, an interesting look at the effects of sensor size to the depth of field. That experiment was pretty successful, I don't shoot the 100-400 often and don't carry it around. So its large size on the X-T5 while comical, is not a huge issue. Its a special purpose thing that I'm glad to have available.
Back to this week, I had an opportunity to try a Canon EF135/f2 on both cameras. I've never used this lens in its intended purpose but looking the 35mm equivalent focal lengths, thought it would be fun to try. Below I have three samples from each camera.
Its a heavy lens for the physical size, 946g, almost GF110 weight (with Fringer attached). Very well built with nice controls. AF on the Gfx is pretty good, better than 645 lenses, a little clunkier than native Fuji. On the X-T5, the AF performance is a little better, as expected. Livable for non-action work. The weight is a little awkward on the X-T5, but you probably wouldn't want this as a "every day" lens anyway. Optical quality is really good on both cameras, I get why this lens has its fans. There is no correction on the Gfx images for vignetting, there is almost none and the only occasion it shows up as shadows in the extreme corners. On the X-T5, I was surprised how good it looks. Probably because its a focal length I don't really have a comparison on with that body.
Anyway, I'm kinda done with saying one lens is better than another. For me, this is interesting and fun. I'll probably grab the GF110 eventually but this is certainly a lower cost option, especially if you have it already or have other EF's you want to try to spread the adapter cost around. For the X mount, its almost a no-brainer if you find a second hand adapter and want to experiment with some big old lenses with great optics. I'm sure there will be reactions that this doesn't fit the Fuji X ethos of small size and I would agree. But considering the quality of the 40mp sensor on the X-T5, you can chart your own course outside the usual. Pics or it didn't happen.....
Very interesting. I’m going to have to give this a try. I own several Canon EF L lenses including the EF 135/2L. I already started to research the Fringer lens mount adapter for EF to XF mount. Trying to decide if I get the Pro II or Pro III adapter. My understanding is the III version is weather resistant and has a mount gasket ring. I don’t think there are any other differences to the version II.
