Well I had a look at the link - I am assuming the BW and other picture settings are in camera profiles, on my Sony I can do similar - tweak any of them to taste (for direct to JPG) or so use when the RAW comes into Lr. I have to access it via menu, and I see no need to map it to a physical button, that’s a setting I wouldn’t change shot to shot.

Can't say, I'm not familiar with Sony's setting system. Sorry.

Pretty much. But the thing with the Zf is a little different. Once you flick the switch you have in you hands a Monochrome camera. All manor of color camera attributes are inactive. It's like putting down a Q2 and picking up a Q2M. It's a tiny silly thing, but has a notable effect on your mental approach to taking photos. I think to fully appreciate it takes working with it. May not appeal to others but it sure worked for me.

A quick web search indicated S1R may have inferior low-light performance.
Is there a reason why Lumix S1R has been mentioned in this thread, but not Lumix S1?
I haven't owned the S1. It may or not make stellar b&w files.
The S1R and SL2 basically shared a sensor. Low light performance was (is) fine but not class leading. But as usual if some camera spec is not no 1 it's instantly labeled as shit. Ia lso mentioned the M8 and M9. Neither noted for their dynamic range but both make fabulous b&w files.
I think if you like a fairly contrasty B7W conversion the S1R suits really well. Any noise is hidden in the darker tones. If you like files that are really open and mid-range then an X1D would be a better choice.

Does it write only monochrome to the RAW file? Or do you get the BW profile and the color data when you import it?
It’s not magically using a monochrome sensor - so it’s still software doing the work behind the scenes taking the readout and creating the monochrome image from a color sensor.
It sounds fun though. If I had unlimited funds I’d have 1 of every camera just to try. Haven’t held a Nikon since my grad school days though.

RAW is RAW and Chroma data is in the raw file. How it looks in LR depends on how you set up LR. If you ask LR for import preserving the camera settings you see a BW image. Otherwise you see a color image.

Correct. It's a metaphysical thing in the way the camera presents itself to you. No magic.

Thank you for the insight. I was not trying to imply that anything is wrong with S1R. I'd love to have one. I was only questioning whether a specific reason caused the S1 to be less emphasized in this thread. Panasonic's older bodies look like a solid option for full-frame purists on a budget who would otherwise take interest in Pentax Monochrome. From the information I've seen, grain simulation may also nudge Panasonic toward the top of the list.

Any comments on how well Lumix performs with human skin? Or comments about in-camera, simulated film grain?
The (rather few) people shots I've done look great and I haven't heard anything other than praise for the camera in this regard. As far as simulations I wouldn't have a clue since I just shoot raw.

Deleted. I'll pay when selling but not to upload photos to a thread response.
Unusual post ... I don't see anything that was deleted, as in a prior post.
As to posting an image, it is also possible to post an image without paying.
As to paying, it is something that might also be considered as an "appreciation" gesture to Fred for all that he has done to bring / maintain FM to us. If folks have no appreciation of / for Fred, then hang on to your pennies.
And, given the nature of this post being incredibly off-topic ... why even post it at all? If your primary utility of FM is the Buy and Sell board (i.e. non-participation in the Forums), again, why post this in a Forum? Just seems rather peculiar, of sorts.

Another vote for the Zf, I prefer my photos SOOC and Nikons B/W settings is realy to my taste. I also thought about the B/W switch as a gimick, but it's realy great. Before I could skip going out to take photos because of the lighning and colors, I never liked giong through menus.

Funny that they limited it to just "monochrome", a profile I never touch. Deep Mono was the game changer for Nikon, and Graphite is super fun in certain light.

Actually, as a working commercial/corporate advertising photographer and teacher for decades, I contribute (on a few boards) when I have a contribution to make. On this particular one, you know a photography board, I was attempting to add photographs to demonstrate/support why I use the color cameras I use for B&W work. I was presented with a pop up that said uploading photographs can only be done by those with "upload and sell" status. Since I haven't been confronted with "upload and sell" to post in a thread, I deleted my post as I couldn't upload photos to properly support my post.
I support the platform and contribute when buying and selling, like on most platforms and haven't felt required to "pay to play" until that post. You've decided this thread is "off topic", so I'm not sure how a thread regarding photography can be considered "off topic" ..... on a photography board. The question posed is certainly "on topic" for a photography forum. Either way, since you've appointed yourself as the person to determine why someone should post in a (this) open forum, I'll leave its commentary and management to you. Thanks.

1) he was saying YOUR post was off-topic
2) you most certainly don't have to upload photos here to share them, which you'd think one would discover over the course of 5 years but here we are

It's not limited to monochrome, mine is always set to deep monochrome....
If you take a step back from being outraged about… nothing, maybe you’ll come back around and contribute.
