The Z8 arrived and I've been immersed in the setup. But I'm completely stymied right now trying to store my desired shooting configurations.
Here's what I hope to do...I'd like to have four stored setups, basically like this:
1 - normal shooting. Single frame release, aperture priority, RAW format, auto ISO with shutter speed sensitivity set to normal. People detect on. IBIS on.
2 - basic 'action' shooting. Same as 1 but 15fps release mode and shutter speed ISO sensitivity set to 'faster',
3 - adapted lens bird/animal shooting - Same as 2, but animal/bird detection on and IBIS disabled (so the lens OSS takes over)
4 - adapted 'pre-release' shooting - Same as 3, but with pre-release capture enabled (which means switching to one of the high speed modes and switching to JPEG.) Also Manual shooting mode (as Auto ISO is crippled when pre-release is used.)
This was easy on the Z6iii, but I can't figure it out on the Z8.
Welcome to Nikon's settings banks hell. Look up custom shooting and settings banks. Some of your desired settings go into custom shooting (ISO and RAW), and others go into custom settings banks. IBIS goes into none, AFAIK. IBIS/VR works together, and you can either have both or none. I would suggest leave it in sport mode and don't touch it unless you really need tripod level stability. Also lookup Recall Shooting Function.

In the Nikon Z system, you can't separate lens and camera VR, they are either both on, or both off. So option 3 is not possible.
While there are custom settings banks, and shooting banks, I never got comfortable with the way they work, and just set the camera up for each application, changing the settings manually one by one.
If you do end up using shooting banks, you can configure a function button to allow you to rotate between the banks. This will avoid menu trips. However, it won't let you switch between custom settings banks.
I would check the "Recall shooting functions" and "Recall shooting functions (hold)" which allow you to program one button to "remember" those settings that you stored (and selected for storing). It's a bit tricky to set up if you don't use it often, but it works very well and would allow you to, for example, to switch between fast action and slow action settings easily.

I had already figured most of that out. The problem is that you can't store drive mode or the pre-capture settings in the banks, so they have to be switched manually after switching banks.
Regarding IBIS/VR, you're correct that normally they can't be activated separately. But when using the Megadap adapter, you disable IBIS if the adapted lens has OSS. This allows the lens' stabilization to work as expected. So my setup needs to enable IBIS most of the time, but when I invoke the user bank for shooting adapted lenses, the IBIS needs to be off.
'settings bank hell' is right. I can't believe they work the way they do on the Z8. Especially after using the Z6iii, where the user memory slots could store everything I wanted.
Recall shooting function does save drive mode. For precapture there is an indirect short cut too. I suggest watching the most recent Steve Perry video

Very helpful! Thanks. I'm getting closer.
Oops, spoke too soon. Looks like the recall shooting function can't store the extended drive modes (ie C15, etc) which are required for pre-release capture. Maybe I'm missing a step.

Yes, that mode is not available in RSF, which is why I suggested Steve Perry's video, he shows a technique that I have been using for long.
It is a shame that users have to jump through so many hoops to be able to do what they need to do. Maybe they will bring Zr's software based modes to Z8/Z9.

Well, feeling a bit better now; I got most of the way there. All I have to do when switching to a different type of shooting is change banks and then manually set the drive mode. Sometimes it will get stuck in JPEG and I'll have to adjust that, but so far it seems to generally do the job.
