September is a great time to visit Yellowstone. These images are from my to Yellowstone during Sept. I highly recommend visiting during the first 2 weeks of September. During this time the crowds are low, temps are great and the animals are very busy. I never go out to Yellowstone during the summer as it can become a huge mess with the summer crowds and traffic. If you are planning a trip out there, I highly recommend going in September.
Michael,
Great and beautiful set, I've been there three times this time of year and really enjoyed it. I looked into coming about now, but I got discouraged by the current hotel rates. I just have to bite the bullet.

Chris, thanks for the kind words. I usually stay in Gardiner where rates are better than in West Yellowstone.
Unfortunately for those of us with school-aged kids, September doesn't work. That said, I've been there in May and January. Both were fantastic, but Winter in particular is truly magical at YS.
