p.1 #1 · Which m-mount 35mm f2 lens has bokeh most similar to the Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 zf?
Hi:
The Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 zf is one of my favorite lenses. I like its bokeh is being on the smooth side while the center is sharp. For my m-mount lens, I have the Voigtlander 35mm f2 ultron, Contax G 35mm f2, Leica 35mm f1.4 steel rim reissue. Those lenses tend to have busy/character bokeh. I wonder which 35mm f2 lens that will have bokeh most similar to the Zeiss. It is more a curiosity question. In theory, I suppose the Zeiss 35mm f2 zm Biogon will be the candidate. I own that lens once, but at the time, I was more obsess with center sharpness.

Of the M mount 35mm lenses I've used that have some of the qualities you described as desirable, the now discontinued VM 35/1.7 comes to mind. It's sharp and with smoother than average bokeh, IMO. But it might not be 'Zeiss' sharp (high in contrast). I got it back in 2015 and it's still my current 35mm favorite on a Leica M with respect to the images it produces. I'm less enamored with its physical design and length.
If you posted a photo or two from the ZE/ZF 35/2 that demonstrates the image characteristics you desire, it may help others visually understand what you're after.

Owning the Zeiss 35mm zf and having the same question, I was swayed by the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 IV when it was released. Have kept the Zeiss classic zf for film
Smaller, lighter, and cleans up at f/2 (more than the Zeiss) while still retaining the smoothness.
Somehow the VM 40mm feels overly smooth to me at times in some examples I've seen.

I will take my D780 and Zeiss 35mm f2 zf out to take some pictures. Will report back later.

In my Nikon camera days I shot with Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 ZF along with Leica Summicron-R 35. Zeiss 35/2 was later adopted to Sony A7R* full frame then replaced by Biogon 35/2 and eventually by Zeiss Distagon T* 1.4/35 ZM (last two on sensor cover modified Sony)
If you like the rendering of Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 ZF, you will love ZEISS DISTAGON T* 1.4/35 ZM and benefit from its extra stop, which you will pay for...
