p.1 #1 · Prairie Dogs

During our drive today we spotted a prairie dog colony. I pulled over and was surprised to see that some had there holes very close to the road. To avoid stressing them I stayed on the oppilate side of the car from them and stayed low and they went about there busyness. I was taking photos of them and there natural behavior when a woman parked her car behind ours and then walked right over to me. At the time I was taking a head shot at MFD. The pore little thing began to tremble. I explained to her that she was stressing the prairie dog and she looked embarrassed as she backed up. I also retreated and the prairie dog went back to it's normal behavior.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Lovely set Morris. Sometimes we don’t realize how we impact the animals

Great shots, Morris! I love these little guys -- we saw a ton of them when we were in So. Dakota, and also last year in Colorado -- we had to be careful not to run over the silly little things constantly running across the road where we were staying.
You got some really nice shots. I especially #4.

Neat set Morris, I like the balance and comp of #1 best.

I love it when things make me curious enough to dig a little and learn something. Your post made me learn this Morris:

"Prairie dogs are a rodent that belongs to the squirrel family. The genus (Cynomys) is derived from the Greek word for "dog mouse"."

Nice shots, and I hate the fact that I won't get to see any of these this year in the wild.

Thank you Eric,
The thing I investigated is how do they get water? From there food

These are really neat, Morris. I thought you were in the New York area. I didn’t know we had prairie dogs in the east. I honestly didn’t know that. It was a great find…

Thank you Terry,

This set was take in Custer State Park, SD. We mostly don't have prairie doses in NYC except for the ones that tunneled under the 8 foot concrete wall of there zoo enclosure and are now living in a few homes lawns. The zoo has collected most of them yet they reproduce rather quickly. Eventual they will capture all of them. There new enclosure has a bottom as well as walls.
