p.1 #1 · How Many Members Still Print Their Own Photography?

I was wondering how many members still print photo files themselves?

Do you do it for your own admiration, others or for sales?

Was just wondering!

I have NOT printed a photo in many years.
Thanks!
Dan

I still print my own work for both my personal usage and for sale. I find printing is the final stage of photography and brings home the vision I was seeing when I pressed the shutter.

I find way more satisfaction looking / holding a print than viewing an image on the screen.

Thanks Harry! I am happy to hear this. Is it a regular event?

Yes I could NOT agree with your reasoning more! I just ran out of space. Glad you have a market for your images!

I only have a tabletop printer, but I print for myself and also print greeting cards. I send files to a lab to be printed for others.

I agree with chez it is not finished till printed.

Same here…I print my own images…well, some of them actually. I've sold a few, but I do not advertise at all. Shoot and print mainly for my own pleasure (Canon pro1000 printer).
Agree with what chez said about printing in general.

As far as space goes, yes you only have so many walls. But have you considered portfolio boxes to store your prints and bring them out when company comes over for viewing. People seem to like holding an actual print for viewing than looking at an image on a screen…at least that is what I’ve observed.

I agree totally with your statement! But I am a sort of, well not "sort of", introvert when this subject comes up..I tend NOT to bring the subject of photography up if not asked. And unfortunaltely it is never! My "circle" would tend to see it more of a "badge" versus an art which is best viewed!

I could NOT agree more BUT.....when your "circle" is really non existent and always well.... "What else are you doing?...bla bla bla.." I was deceiving myself I think..
Thanks!

Great news! Maybe I should re-think my "non print mentality"?
Now cost me a fortune to "clear my nozzles" and add new cartridges. I have Canon 9000 and 9500 II's and beaucoup Red River papers.
Thanks!

When I made money from my photography through Sports, portraiture, weddings, etc., I printed all of the time and owned three printers 17”, 24”, 48”. After moving and moving on to where I shoot only as a hobby, I still have two printers 17”, 24” and print my WL work mainly for myself, F&F, charity events, and the rare commission.

I have pretty much given up printing myself. Recently I have switched to printing on aluminum and canvas wraps exclusively for images I sell or give away. I still have any interesting image printed for my own use.

Unfortunately I don't print anymore. I would if I could, but can't so I don't.
My printer is clogged and it's too much for me to move.

Looking at images is, to me, such a transitory experience. I have a wall where I just hang prints on somewhat of a temporary basis, say 2-4 weeks. Looking at them for a few weeks gives me feedback on what I like and sometimes, things I don’t like.

At the same time, while I love the finished product, the process of getting there can be extremely frustrating. I think I’m a better photographer because I print.

I had to sell my large format printer a couple years ago and I’ve missed it a TON.

For the 3 years prior to that, I liked to buy a 18x24 or so size portfolio binder with 24-50 “views” and I would print my favorite 24-50 photos from that year. Kinda a large format version of scrapbooking lol.

As soon as I can get more settled I am at least going to resume the practice, although I may need to settle on a 13” printer and do 12x18s in a 13x19 portfolio binder.

I'm just getting into printing for myself with an Epson ET-8550. Reasonably inexpensive to run and learn on. Truthfully, I think the prints from it look great. Previously I was printing a few images each year with a company online. I will still use the online service for heavier papers and specialty printing.

I do all of my own printing. We have several printers ranging up to a P9000. The only times a photo gets out without me printing it are when I license a file for reproduction in a publication or very rare cases when the client prints it much larger than I can. (I’ve had stuff printed up to 30’ wide.)

So, reasons I print:

1. For sales, exhibits, and similar.

2. To refine the image for print. The first attempt usually reveals the potential for further refinement, so initial prints are always small as I work on them.

I used to print all the time when I was doing shows and selling. It's been a long time though. I used an Epson R1800. Last time I tried firing that baby up it was badly clogged and wasn't "cleaning" despite running a ton of expensive ink through it.

I'm retired now and thinking about starting up again. I always enjoy having the finished product in my hand and my photography feels a bit empty when I don't do prints. I can't seem to find anyplace local to me that evens offers a quality printing service.

My large format printer head tanked about 6 years ago and I haven't bothered printing since. I have sent out a couple for print, but that's it. More recently I am using digital frames.
