I was having a hard time cleaning up a dragonfly image shot at 12800 on a 24mp Rebel. Fortunately I'd shot raw + jpeg, I grabbed the jpeg and didn't have much trouble (got nr in camera)

So , yes, nice photos (barred?) but 1) 16,000 on ff isnt that high, really and 2) posting high iso on compressed files isn't really indicative of where youre likely to have problems imo

16,000 is high for me. I try to be at ISO 4000 and below any time I can. 16,000 or 25,600 is like when I'm deciding if I should just go home or just shoot perched shots. But sometimes I decide to give it a shot and both the R1 and A1II did well IMO. Still not an ISO I like to be at very often. It works for these owls as they are relatively close and therefore I don't have to crop excessively. For a lot of my shooting I crop too much to be using those high ISOs no matter how good NR is these days.

Yeah if youre cropping I suppose it doesn't take much of a crop to get to aps, I try to avoid 12800 usually 6400 isn't too bad, though. One guy used to post 12800 on here even from original 7D, he had it nailed down and automated, even.

Fro mentioned 51200 jpegs being clean on the R1, you might give it a try especially since it's going to be getting darker earlier. I'm not familiar with the R1 settings, but on some cameras it gives you usm type adjustments to get more detail
