p.1 #1 · London Cityscape / Travel Photography: Sony 20-70 or Tamron 17-28 + 28-75?

Curious what folks think will be a good lens or lens combo for London. I have the 17-28 right now and have been considering the 28-75 from Tamron. But the Sony 20-70 is appealing giving the compact size and covering most of the range in a single lens. I think the 2.8 vs 4 aperture difference shouldn't matter much for the type of photography I'm doing (even indoor architecture). I've heard various things about Sony's sharpness, while I believe the Tamrons are pretty well regarded? Or if I have to take two "large" lenses, perhaps a Tamron 28-200 would at least be even more versatile when paired with the 17-28?

Would appreciate opinions or thoughts on this dilemma.

Look through what Joshua @AGeoJO has posted on the FE images thread on his trip to France. I think he was predominately A7Cr and 16-25 and I think he had a number with the 20-70.

I think most will tell you the 20-70 is the better choice. However...
On a trip to London I used a 16-35 almost exclusively, and that was with an a7III. I appreciated the 16mm quite often.
If you have an R series, the 17-28 is a great choice. It's an excellent light lens you can carry all day. The 28-75 is also one of my favorite lenses ever, so it's an easy choice for me.
And I do think the 2.8 makes a significant difference. You're probably not going only to shoot architecture.

an ultrawide lens can be great in the city. but i would want something like a 12-24 for that. if only one lens i would take my 20-70. thats why i have it. f4 is enough even for portraits...
limiting yourself can also be fun

I am on my first day currently in Dublin, Ireland. I am taking my 20-70mm, 16-25mm among other lenses, using my A7c R on this trip. I haven't had the chance of using any other lenses other than the 20-70mm and I have been pleased with its performance.

Although my travel hasn't included London, my experience has got me thinking several things. I very much expect I'd want coverage from 16mm or 17mm to 200mm. I'd take my 28-200 and 17-28, with or no question. However, in urban "Old Cities," walk around "Europe," and the like, I did a lot of lens swapping back and forth at 28mm with that pair or similar aps-c pairs. That said, a 20-70 would be so broadly useful that I'd expect it to do away with almost all of the lens swapping.

If packing and leaving tomorrow, I'd take the 20-70, 28-200 and 17-28. I haven't had the 20-70/4 long enough to be really sure about not taking the 17-28 and on other trips I've used 16mm or 17mm. I'd take the 28-200 instead of say a 24-70 and 70-200.

Depends on your style of photography, I've shot a ton of images in London.
17-28 is a great choice, the rest depends on how much you want to carry.

Longer focal length will give you options of tighter compositions for detail shots.

I'd go with 17-28, 28-200 and add a fast prime if you want.

There's a lot of popular tourist hotspots, but if you want a peaceful couple of hours and some stunning architecture don't miss visiting the inner temple area just off fleet street, and if you can time a visit to include Temple church, you won't regret it.

Some pics to give you ideas:

Beautiful shots of London on you website, John.

I will be going to Belgium in 10 days. The primary reason for the trip is the Sanicole airshow, for which I will bring my Sony A1, A1II, 100-400GM and 300GM+1.4X and 2X TCs.

I will have two days for Ghent and Bruges, no time for Brussel. For the cityscape stuff, I want to bring the 24-70 GMII, CV15 and CV21 f1.4. I know I will be doing some night time street shooting and prefer the sunstar of the Voigtlander 15 and 21. I have the Sony 16-25 G f2.8 and still haven't sold the Sony 16-35 G f4 but they will stay home this time. I will also bring the IR Canon R5 with the EF 16-35 f4 IS.

I haven't added up the weights of what I want to bring. I don't know how strict SAS Airlines is in enforcing the 8 kgs carryon weight limit.

We’re doing Christmas markets and trains in Germany this December. Taking my A7C2, 16-25, 20-70, 24gm and 85 batis. I’ll use the primes at night but for day time, zooms. I might rent a 70-200F4 as well but really want compact. One of my A7C2s may turn into a CR before the trip.

If I buy the 20-70, I might also grab the Laowa 15mm Cookie for ultra-wide. It's so small, that you can literally pocket it, so it doesn't feel like carrying two lenses. Though once I have those two, I really have to wonder why keep the Tamron 17-28? And instead of the Tamron 28-200, should I eventually get a more standard 70-200 for telephoto at some point down the road? Still would make for a "two" lens kit (given the size of the Laowa), but would lose out on the 2.8 (but I never take portraits or super shallow DoF stuff).

Yeah that was one option I was thinking of eventually (not for this trip). I think 17mm to 20mm gap isn’t maybe as differentiated as say a 14 or 15mm to 20mm gap. So if I got the 20-70 plus the Laowa 15, the 17-28 lens is an odd man out in a sense.

A two or three lens "good enough" kit might be handier and less fussing around and less expensive, smaller and lighter, than a 3 or 4 or more lens kit with more range and wider apertures, and maybe a fast prime or two snuck in. Especially traveling with others. Daily itineraries vary, how much has to go along vs what can be swapped around between "day" and "night" opportunities

I'm not sure 16mm or 17mm is ideally "wide enough." But I don't have a 14-24 or 12-24 of any sort and do have a 17-28. With my A7Riv, the 28-200 is an easy carry. I think, having tried it on my A6700, I'd prefer the 20-70 as a main carry lens if using an A7C series. How far one walks in a session between a couple of hours or all day, leave things in a safe spot in a hotel or vehicle or all gets carried much of the time might moderate one's choices.

My wife wants me to enjoy the trips, seeing and experiencing and not getting too immersed in photography. A good idea. I didn't get all the photos I may have wanted but really had a good time on the trip and enjoyed not worrying about "missing" photos. OK, kicking myself that I didn't chimp after the gargoyle shots that I somehow screwed up.

the 14-24 Samyang is always an option. When I went to Italy, the 28F2 with the 21mm adapter was the widest I had at the time, and it was plenty. that trip I took a 28m 55 and 70-200F4 I had. too many choices

When I went to China for landscape shoot last year, even the 70-200 F4 macro was a bit too big for me, I bought a Batis 135 for the trip. I think this is the 4th time I own this lens.

Thanks for all the opinions. I think I've decided on:

Bought an A7CR to take instead of my A7RIV (likely will sell that).
Buying the 20-70 f4 as my main lens.
Likely will buy the Sony 16mm f1.8 G as my wide angle (small, fast, has autofocus)

I'm hoping this kit in general will motivate me to take the Sony gear out more. Currently it just sits at home because I love shooting with the Leica M system. But that system does have its limitations and sometimes, I don't want to deal with them. A small, lightweight Sony system with zoom flexibility and auto focus will be differentiated in the right places for me, while still retaining the compactness I love about Leica.

I carried a 16-35/4 with me to Dublin and I used 16mm quite a bit. Your selections are definitely good ones between 20mm and 75mm but I'd definitely want a lens that produced excellent results at 16mm. I'm not familiar with the Tamron 17-28mm.

Everything I've read about the Sony 16 f1.8 G indicates it is an excellent lens. The small size means there is distortion, but it is corrected via a profile. I imagine being a prime, it is going to outperform the Tamron and the 16-35 f4 Sony as well.

WOW just looked at Sanicole, lineup looks amazing, especially the chance to see f4 Phantoms flying.
I used to shoot airshows in my canon days with a 400/5.6, now that my daughter is getting older I might start getting back into it.

Bruges is amazing, one of my favourite destinations, found it more interesting than Brussels
