p.2 #1 · General Question About Travel & Tariffs

I had to chuckle at this! No disrespect but a great analogy! Good humor. YES Retain one's composure at all times in travels with officials. They are trained to detect anxiety in responses regardless of whether you are correct or hiding something and I am NOT saying anybody here is. Nature of our times.

I believe this is thee correct statement regardless of my chuckle and it has all to do with about a water surfer at Whistler. But both can require a "board"? And YES "The Ugly American" does still exist outside our shores and to our neighbors N&S of

In 2018 my friends and I started taking our coffins filled with surfboards to Waco Texas and Lemoore California. We got a lot of awkward stares in the airports and rental car locations wondering WTH we were doing. Both areas are completely landlocked of course, but this is where the first two worthy wave pools were built in the US. Now seven years later wave pools are sprouting up everywhere. So someday soon you just might see surfers headed to Whistler with their surfboards if they decide to build a wave pool there. When they do, I'll be headed up with my surfboards and I'll expect even heavier interrogations in the airport.

My college roommate for 2 years was a Maryland surfer. He lived on Maryland's Eastern Shore not far from Ocean City. He was also a skateboarder and went to classes on it. Now this was back in the mid 1960's. So yes he got some strange stares on campus.

I have been to Whistler both in Summer and Winter. This was the 1980's. I love Vancouver, BC and Whistler. IT wasx the first time I had seen a live Bald Eagle! The drive up the road along the river to Whistler was filled with Eagles.

Thanks for your info! You get back to Waco, let me know. My nephew is on the athletic staff at Baylor.

NIce, I agree the drive from Vancouver to Whistler is beautiful. We are usually in a hurry but next time I'll have to stop and look for some eagles along the way if we don't get held up in the airport for too long

Tell your nephew to check out the wave pool if he already hasn't. Him and his buddies can do a private session for beginners and they'll get on their feet for sure. The wave pool has come a long way since 2018 when it was called BSR cable park. It was a wealthy man's experiment to build it on his land and it used to be very "wild west". We would surf until 1am and there was no staff around other than a couple guys we were sharing waves with.

It has now changed ownership and is much more corporate:

That's interesting. An FM member apparently was involved in the development of the Palm Springs Surf Club... https://palmspringssurfclub.com

Of course I was just ribbing you about why a surfer would go to Whistler. It wasn't lost on me the similarities between surfing and snowboarding. As you aptly illustrated, Whistler is a year round destination for outdoor enthusiasts such as yourself.

I know the guys who were involved with Palm Springs Surf Club and I don't think any of them hangout here, but I do know someone here who's involved with the other Palm Springs pool that will be opening soon:

As I mentioned earlier these pools are sprouting up everywhere and eventually they'll probably be in every large city. There are a few different technologies being used, but for now the best wave pools in the world from a wave quality/length perspective are the three below:

OK, yeah, it's probably this one from what I remember previously. I didn't realize there was already another facility (PSSC) and was a bit surprised that the one I was thinking of was already operational.

Yeah, PSSC is operational and I would consider the wave just "okay". There's another massive luxury development in the works that should be finished in the next few years, also in the desert:

In Oceanside, OceanKamp is another wave pool development that hit a roadblock while uncovering some human bones during grading:

And, there's another one in the planning stages in Newport Beach. I can't keep up with all of them, but In a few years there could be 6-7 wave pools to choose from in Southern California alone.
