Curious about who likes and/or uses what. This isn't meant as a dig to anybody so there are no rights or wrongs, I'm just curious about who likes what and why.
I'll start. I personally don't care for anything tone-mapped, and most especially when it's heavier-handed and obvious. I'm not 100% sure of what precisely my bias against it is other than what I find a "fake" look.
Some solarized images work for me, but usually they're architectural in nature with a strong geometric component. When it's done to more traditional subject matter, I find the look somewhat "fake" like tone-mapped. Again, not 10-0% sure why, just is for me...
To be clear, I do enjoy very high or even very low contrast imagery, and similarly I find "high key" or "low key" processes artistic when performed well.
I also regularly appreciate IR looks especially when held back to a moderate level, but depending on the subject I can also appreciate certain heavier ones. At the same time and for whatever reason, false color IR doesn't stir me very much.

Jack,
I use solar routines that I developed ( I have 4 routines). But not all of the time.
I test an image in Lightroom and keep or reject. it takes only a few moments to decide.
Sometimes the effect just bolls me over and I have to use it! but not often . . . .
stay well, and let us know what you find out . . . . tom

Thanks Tom, I really appreciate your input. Your use of Solar is one I regularly find interesting. The fact you have 4 separate routines is interesting too -- can you share any more details about how they differ? I am a total neophyte when it comes to Solar.

Yes I too would love to see your solar workflow Tom. I don't intend to copy, just seeing where I went wrong. It is indeed unique and very eye catching. You always have the correct subject for its use and that is what sets you above the masses!

Here is a good description of tone mapping: Tone Mapping
Thanks jon!
With the Fall colors coming, I need to explore "Tone Mapping".
Again thanks!

After reading the posts and doing some research, I think the subject would dictate to me my use of either or both Jack. I would be more inclined to use tone mapping in my style of photography but do enjoy playing with solar if the subject works.
