I used to have the Sigma 120-300 2.8 lens and it was amazing for kids soccer and rodeo shooting. Much more flexible than a fixed 200 f2.

The 200/2's a bit heavier than the 300GM. It's not quite as long, but it really isn't that much smaller, either. Otherwise, I hadn't considered that perspective. My wildlife kit is the 70-200GII on the a6700 for bugs and small critters, and the 300GM and extenders on the a1. I don't have a need for anything faster in that kit. What sort of subjects would you look to shoot with it?

Good point on the 300GM being close in weight. I was thinking of my 300mm F, which is over 6lbs.

In the DSLR days, I was using a very similar setup to you, 70-200 f2.8, 300mm f2.8, d500 (crop), d800e (ff) + TC's for wildlife.

The last few years I have mostly been using the Sony 200-600 f6.3 and Sony 24-105 f4, which for the last year is now mostly the Nikon 24-120 f4. It's very rare that I miss the 100-200mm range for wildlife. If I am doing something more dynamic, like an air show, I break out my Tamron 70-300 f6.3 to cover the missing range.

In my experience, especially in warmer months, I get a bunch of shore birds that like to come back the the wetlands as the light falls. A few weeks ago, I was pushing my 200-600 to ISO 12,800 at f6.3. As it continued to get darker, more birds were still coming in, but I gave up at that point due to the extreme ISO. If I could have switched to a 400mm f4, I definitely could have continued photographing longer. Less extreme but more common, I find myself pushing the ISO to around 3,200 at f6.3 for birds that have decided to land in shadowy spots. The last one is a much more of a nice to have, but if I had a 200mm f2 in my bag, I can't help but feel it could make some really nice photos of birds I can get close to, like ducks.

For the future, on paper, the 400-800mm f8 sounds like a great update over my 200-600 for super telephoto work, as often I end up using the TC f1.4 on the 200-600. But I have hesitated to buy it because I am not going to carry around a 200-600 and 400-800 at the same time, and I do find the gap of 100-400 to large not to fill. Sure I could go the more traditional route and get a 100-400 f5.6, but for 1lb more, a 200mm f2 that takes TCs I feel could open up a nice amount of additional possibilities a 100-400 can't.

Given that Sigma is blocked from TCs on E mount, I assume it came down to what design alterations would have been required to enable L mount teleconverters. I suspect (maybe I'm wrong) that they sell more E mount lenses then L mount lenses. Even if I'm wrong, only they now the tradeoffs that would have had to been made to make the lens TC compatible. At least the L mount users could have had that option.

And everyone has desires for specific lenses Maybe a 100-300/2.8 will still come....maybe this was a royal screwup they'll regret. (I kind of doubt it though.) Maybe a 100-300/2.8 would have been more popular and that's the route they should have gone.

Seems like a bit of a halo lens for Sigma though.

Nikon Z users have had some success using Sony E TC's on Sigma lenses adapted to Nikon Z. Granted, I have no idea how big the market is for such a use case, but the Sigma 300-600 f4, has definitely sparked up interest.

A 100-300 f2.8 could definitely be an interesting option, and maybe that Sigma's plan and why they optimized the 200mm f2 to not take TC's. A 28-105 f2.8, 100-300 f2.8, and 300-600 f4 would make a lot of sense in a lens lineup.

Personally, for a 100-300mm f2.8 to replace how I would have used a 200mm f2 that took TC's in my kit, it's going to largely come down to size and weight. If sigma works some magic and it's close to the weight of the 200mm f2 I would have to consider it. But if it's 7+ lbs like their 120-300mm f2.8 sport, it's not going to work for me.

I would think adapted E+TC to Z is a pretty big edge case for a company like Sigma. If they didn’t do it as a choice, to make it workable for L, I doubt the above would have tipped the scales much further.

Canon only produced 8000 copies of "eye of Sauron" 200mm f1.8 (reference: https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/10/canons-holy-grail-using-the-canon-200mm-f1-8-l-usm/#:~:text=At%20an%20incredible%20f%2F1.8,in%20its%2016%2Dyear%20run) during its 16 years run. Although this sigma is a lot more affordable than the Canon. May be it will sell a bit more.

Interestingly, Nikon seemed to produce a similar number of 200mm f2s.

But to put it in perspective, more common lenses like the 400mm f2.8, 500mm f4, and 600mm f4, on the Nikon side, have only sold about 2x more copies. The sigma is smaller, lighter, cheaper, and has less competition, especially on L mount.

As did I and agree, it was great to use. An updated e-mount version would be an instant buy for me for field sports. Even without being able to use a TC. Although a Sony version that wasn't insanely priced would be even better.

Is L mount very popular? I never heard of it until recently. I expect Sigma to sell far more in Sony E.
Is it possible to adapt a Simga in E mount to the Z8?

Yes, E-mount lenses are generally adaptable to Z-bodies.
Unlike Sony (15fps limit), there are no fps limitations, but adapters always mean a compromise compared to native lenses.

I don't know whether Sigma will sell significantly more in E-mount than in L-mount.

Because the L-mount is the only mount that offers the option of a teleconverter, and a 200/2 is predestined for TC support like few other lenses.
It makes a lens like a 200/2 so much more versatile and gives such an investment so much more substance.
In theory, this would also work with the Z-mount, but it would require compatible TCs, which are not available because Sony prohibits them for E-mount Sigma lenses, so Sigma doesn't offer any for the E-mount at all.

For many lenses, this is no big deal, but with a 200/2, FPS limitation and even more a TC ban takes away so much from the lens, which would multiply its value for many users with TCs and thus as a 200/2, 280/2.8, and 400/4.

I do find it’s quite ironic that for the scenarios that truly need the high FPS, the AF of the Nikon Z with E-mount will not be able to keep up with tracking. In the end, it’s best to stick to native lenses.

The new Megadap looks very promising and the more aggressive AF of the next gen Nikons might just prove you wrong, we’ll see!

That makes sense. Also, the 400-800 is a nice all-around step up from 200-600. Optics are better, OSS is improved, and it's stickier on the AF from 400-600 and much stickier than the 200-600 with the 1.4x on the longer half. It's one I've gone back and forth on ordering, but now I think I'll wait until next spring and see what used copies are hanging about.

For this lens, there is no ban. Just like some Sony lenses, eg GM 135 1.8, it is not compatible with TCs.

Until someone tries this lens adapted, the predicted compromise is unknown.
There are examples of adaption compromises being so minor that they are close enough to irrelevant. eg, Canon 400 DOII adapted to Sony.

I have not looked into sales figures, but the L mount does seem to be gaining popularity as a fairly open FF mount ecosystem. The brief history is that the L in L mount stands for Leica, which started the L mount as their FF mirrorless mount. So, unless Leica stops there FF mirrorless lineup, I don't see the L mount going anywhere.

The L Mount Alliance started when Panasonic and Sigma joined in making lenses and cameras for L mount. Since then, multiple other companies have joined, adding cameras and lenses. Sigma does seem to make the most lenses, though, and a few Leica L lenses are rehoused Sigma lenses. Panasonic is making some impressive optics to from what I have seen in reviews.

https://l-mount.com/en/home

While Leica cameras seem to be popular with photographers willing to pay the premium price, Panasonic and Sigma cameras have seemed to be popular for video and photography niches. But each year, Panasonic and Sigma bodies are getting closer and closer to competing with mainstream photography bodies from Sony, Nikon, and Canon. I would not be surprised if over the next few years, L mount becomes a 4th serious mount. Just to give an idea, currently on B&H there are 177 FF L mount lenses for sale, with 92 being AF.

I have come close to buying this lens too many times to count this year. I don't know if I have ever been so indecisive about buying a lens. The initial unavailability and price increase definitely didn't help. If I don't get it in the next month or so for fall migration, I will probably wait for spring too.

Somehow we already have information that it appears to adapt well to Nikon:

I'm curious how many L bayonet bodies there are in the 30FPS+ range where the 15FPS of a Sigma adapted to a1/a1 II for example is a hindrance.

I don't have a good enough knowledge of L mount cameras to give a full count, but I know the Panasonic S1R ii can do up to 40 fps with electronic shutter in raw and the Panasonic S1 ii can do 60fps 14bit raw or 70 fps 12 bit raw with electronic shutter.
