p.1 #1 · Lens suggestion for cart racing please

Hello .....I always have enjoyed motorsports and now a brand new cart racing circuit has been built near me and I would like to do some shooting at the track.

http://lorainkartplex.com

Will be shooting Sony A1 and since I am a bird photographer my lenses are limited. I do have the 200-600 Sony and a Sony 24-105 but was thinking maybe better off with the 70-200 range or the 35-150 ............. if any of you are shooting carts and have some thoughts please let me know.

From a general sports perspective, you can never go wrong with a 70-200. If the Sony 200-600 can keep up with birds, I have to believe it can keep up with a (small) auto.

It appears from what I can see online that there are no plans showing where you can or cannot shoot from. With that in mind, I would bring as wide of range of focal lengths as possible.

Some kart tracks are quite tight where you are right on top of the track. A good rule of thumb is that you need about 100 mm for every ten yards for a full size individual. If you are not on top of the track a 70-200 is going to be too short maybe. The 200-600 may be a good range particularly if all of the races are in good light. At most tracks you would not be close enough to make good use of a 35-150. You may now have a good excuse to preorder the Sigma f2 200. I think you can probably get fine subject isolation with your 200-600. I am suprised someone built a new kart track. Most of the ones I know have closed over the years. If you don't have a 70-200 it's a very good all purpose sports lens.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I'm going to find out where they will allow me to shoot from and then make a decision.
The Sigma 200 f/2 really sounds like a sweet lens

I’ve shot tons of karting at many different tracks and my favorite lens is my 300mm. Your 200-600 will be perfect 👌

A 70-200 is likely best here if you're thinking pan shots, and the 35-150 or 24-70 will be good for wides also depending on how close they allow you to the track. If you want far tights, the 200-600 could work but you'd only get folks separated if they're not clumped up/in a pack, or if you're on the outside of a corner where you could get them staggered as they turn.

I usually use a 70-200/2.8S and a 400/2.8S TC (Nikon) for motorsports, but the 400 would be too long for karts.
