Just unpacked New camera with no manual for general settings just to get started. Does anyone know of a short guide, with some of the main setups. I never had any problem with my A7R at all. I needed this for a trip and don't have time for a 578 pg Manual. Fine Art has a great one, which I almost used, then realized it was for the A7RIII
1. The 70-200 F4 Macro has something inside that slides Rt when lens is tipped to the Rt then slides left when tipped to the left. I was told this is the image stabilization, over the phone, but is it supposed to hit each end when it slides?.
2. RAW or JPEG don't seem to be in the menu under shooting. A guy Jared Polis has a YouTube showing how to set this, but his menu on the left is the same as mine, but not on the right side, which is where mine does not show RAW or JPG.
3. The hot shoe in the middle of the top of camera does not look like a hot shoe at all and I could not put a flash on it. I read it is used for sound, but I thought flash as well.
OK, so more specifically, the camera is in Standby mode, when I look at the screen, not the normal screen with the battery on the left and the number of pics. This is how it was as soon as I put the charged battery in. I am in the Sony help guide, which is huge and can't find out how to get out of Standy Mode, which I think is for Movies. The Mode Dial is set to M for Manual settings but the little SQ dial below it has 3 setting and I need to set it to Still image shooting mode. I don't see where to operate that dial, just the Mode dial it's under..I think that's why my shooting settings were Not showing up. Sorry for the stupid questions that make me look like a troll. I would delete this, but I don't see a delete button.
EDIT: The OP changed the thread title from something like I already HATE my A7CR. That's what I replied to.
"read the manual, make love" - to make sure there's no misunderstanding - A7CR doesn't double up as a sex toy. It is a photography tool.😍
Lenses with linear motors will generally exhibit "sliding of focusing groups(s)" along the rails inside when no power is applied and you tip it back and forth.

That's so it can be used as a baby rattle when it is not being used for photos.

I think that is mentioned somewhere in the manual. ;-)

There is a separate tab on the right side of the mode dial. That is what allows you to change from S&Q, Video or Stills
Thanks MCBroomf and TSDevine for your info - The Standby mode went away after setting the SQ on stills. I was able to find that in the Manual after everyone shamed me. It's just that the Manual is so big and I find it scattered as far as finding an answer to a single question. I need to be able to use this ASAP, so am realizing I should have purchased it sooner.
As far as the 70-200, my concern is that it hits each side after sliding. I wish I had more to compare it to, to see if there are ones where that is not so severe. As soon as I get my settings straight i will try it out.
Ruthenium and Jonas - So if the Manual actually says that, the same people must have written the Manual that wrote the Instructions for a Bore scope they sell at HD, which comes with a warning, "Do NOT use this for personal inspections." I guess they thought some people would buy it for a DIY colonoscopy or something.

it's good you found out how to set the camera for still images. There is, admittedly, a lot of settings. I use the user positions 1-2-3 a lot.
The manual, well, it may also have been written by the guys who never more forget to mention drying wet pets in the microwave is forbidden.
I now find the Help Guide easier to use as the PDF version. The on-line version no longer allows you to see a table of contents on the left for some reason. As you found you now need to query it for info which I find a lot less useful (for general learning),
I suggest using A (aperture priority) mode. Is the F4 lens the only one that you intend to use? If yes, then you are mostly limited by the aperture with the options to close it to f/5.6 or f/8 if you need the increased depth of field.
Control the shutter speed by selecting the Auto ISO minimum shutter speed between "Faster," "Fast," "STD (Standard)," "Slow," "Slower," or whatever the exact optins in this setting are. For autofocus, try continues and a small spot with tracking. Put the spot on your target, half press the shutter and recompose.
I don't have the exact experience with A7CR, but I hope that what I know from using the A1 is applicable.
Try to formulate specific questions, then it is easier for others to give you the help you need.
Sorry for my poor sense of humor, by the way.

It has been this way for a while. Download the PDF version to your phone/tablet and you will always have it handy.

You haven't looked hard. It's under Shooting > Image Quality/Rec > File Format

Did you take the cover off? Hopefully you are not trolling with this post. If you really are not, then, I would suggest that you spend some time watching the video referenced above and also going through the manual.

I have a good friend who is an ER doctor...you'd be absolutely shocked what he sees on the, uh, insertion front...or not...
