p.1 #1 · Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Di III AF performance vs Sony

Hi all
I have had the Sony 90 G macro since it's release and though it is not a lens I use much I am wondering if the AF on the Tamron is really that much better when trying to following say spiders that are on a web and moving in the breeze. The Tamron gets pretty glowing reviews especially for its AF compared to the Sony so I was wondering if anyone has experience of it in the sort of scenario compared to the Sony. Thanks

I've got the Tamron 90mm and I do think the AF is quite good on my A1, I've never used the Sony but I've got some thoughts to share.

When you get close to 1:1 even good AF isn't as "point and shoot" as regular shooting. The DOF is so shallow that it still requires patience. So in your scenario, the size of the spider and how close you want to get are going to make a pretty big difference in your keeper ratio.

I haven't had the Tamron very long, but I did get a shot similar to what you are describing just yesterday. I was taking a photo of a flower (easy) noticed a small bug on the flower and decided to get closer. This is when I noticed the flower was moving a bit in the breeze, so I put the small focus point on the bug and had the A1 in AF-C. I could see the bug come in and out of focus a bit even with continuous focus, so I had to wait a moment before pressing the shutter. I did "get the shot" so I guess my short answer is, it is capable of that kind of shooting, but keep your expectations reasonable.

Here is the wider flower shot so you can see how small this guy was and the close up. Sorry for the sample size of 1.

Sony have been 'rumoured' to be bringing out a 100mm macro soon-ish. Obviously that will have fast AF but it will no doubt come at a price.
