p.1 #1 · Thypoch Simera 28mm 1.4 Z mount - images & discussion
I searched through the different forum subgroups and also through my history (posts and likes) to try and find this topic thread which I and some others had contributed to. I was unable to find it.....so if @fredmiranda or others can locate it and make active again, I'll be happy to delete this and add to the previous topic. If not, I'll start us off again.
Life has finally slowed down to the point of getting out with this lens again for some street images. The biggest downside to this lens is that it does not have contacts.....so focus confirmation and the exif info is not available. Many have opted for adapting other mount versions of this lens to get around this. I heard that there may be a newer version in the works for a Z-mount with contacts, but I don't see anything marketed for this yet. The vignetting is perhaps the next big negative. I don't mind it for f1.4 shots / portraits, but I also see the fall-off with shots taken at higher apertures (f5.6-f11). As my intention is to use this lens primarily for street, I'm a bit fussed by it. Lastly, the caps fall off this lens (front and back). I've tried other caps and it's not the cap it comes with, but the lens itself. The caps fall off in the bag and I'm concerned there will be some scratching of the elements.
This lens does have some flaring but it's overall a very solid lens for a small 1.4 aperture lens. It's sharp and yet it can compete with the Nikon 28mm 1.4E for portraits.....but I would use the latter still for portraits as it is just a bit more smooth / airy in its bokeh.
Overall, I'm happy to have it in my hands and will use it for the next year or so. I love this focal length and it's a nice-looking lens on the Zf. The aperture ring provides an enjoyable clicky feeling and the focus ring is smooth. The focal range visual is great for street photography......better than the Voigtlander lenses I have. It's nice to use for f5.6-f11 street photography with the occasional portraits at f1.4. It performs well overall and the price was reasonable.
Here are some images I took last night with this lens. I'm relatively new to manual lenses, so this is a work in progress:

Curious, you and I had a little message back and forth about a possible version 2 in the other topic thread that I can't find. Can you find that in your search? I'd rather not create a second topic here.

Does anybody have info about an upcoming release of the 50mm Simera for Nikon Z Mount? There is already a youtuber who is using the z mount version, but I cannot find anything online about when it is going to be released.

Scott, what do you think, which lens will be better for general street photography etc - this 28mm (chipped, if comes out) or Voigtlander 28APO Z (also, when it comes out)?

Two lenses that couldn’t be more different in their rendering styles. Pick which one has the look you prefer.

Was able to pick up a Thypoch 28 1.4 yesterday, and after testing it around the house I am quite happy with it. Has a nice feel on the focus ring, and sharp wide open on the Z6ii. Will make a great video lens I think, and is fun to shoot stills with.
I can't find it now but there was a great vid on the tube that compared this lens with CV 28mm F1.5, overall I preferred the warmer rendering of the Thypoch but was put off with the lack of electrical contacts.
I could adapt from VM, but lenses this wide tend to smear a bit in the corners.so I am waiting for the V2 which I will be all over.

I have indeed preferred the Thypoch rendering compared to every lens in its class that I've seen it compared against, but like you, I want the definitive native Z option and am willing to wait for it.
I did email them just for giggles today to see if the updated version is on track, and to content-creator-beg for one

I hope they come through for you with that.
I managed to find a very short video, but the original video was alot longer than this one and I found it very useful when trying to make up my mind over which lens I preferred.
The original had multiple examples, completely unscientific wayt o do it, but it gave me a good sense of how the lenses looked which was what I was after.
Looking forward to v2 being released as 28mm is a gap for me as my beloved Pentax K 30mm 2.8 really doesn't render that well with Nikon colour science compared to Sony (who ever thought that would happen!)
It is annoying me so much I have even thought about a cheap A7iii just for that lens. Luckily my common sense is still working...

@sungphoto - I think you were previously asking about flare. Sorry, I didn't get out again to test with recorded camera settings. I see flare in my shots at higher apertures.....but unfortunately without the contacts, I can't tell you what settings I used. You have the lens now, but sorry I couldn't give you a better sense of this beforehand.
So far with the flare I've seen, it's not a game-breaker for me. But most of my use with this lens will be for street, so I haven't really tested it much at lower apertures / with portraits.

No worries! I will be putting the lens through its paces on a music video shoot next week, and I'm going to be doing a lot of intentional flare so was just wondering.
I also just picked up a Nikon 43-86 f3.5 non AI lens (chrome ring) for a similar purpose
Thanks Scott. Looks like I couldn't find it because I didn't go back to the 2024 Archive (last post was June this year which is what was tripping me up).
@fredmiranda - not sure if the two topics can be merged or if we just move forward with this thread now? This topic's title may make more sense but there's useful info in the last thread (but link now provided above). Cheers!

FWIW I just go to google and type in the thread title with Fred Miranda on the end of the search, much easier to find that way.
