my daughter plays and i've been thinking about taking more game shots. problem is that her program has a policy that all parents have to sit in the outfield during the games, which would require a big lens and basically limits the range of shots i could take.
from your experience do you think the RF70-200mm could manage getting close ups from that distance or is more length needed?

What age is your daughter? My granddaughter is 10 so she is still on the smaller field. I use the RF 100-500 from the outfield during the day. Looks at some of my other posts for softball and you’ll see some of those outfield shots of the batter/catcher/umpire.
A 70-200 isn’t long enough from the outfield IMHO. You’d have to crop a LOT with that. With my R5/R5II bodies, I’ve got a big enough file I can crop quite a bit, but quality will still suffer.
