p.1 #1 · Update: Recommended Sling Bags for the Canon R3 & Other Large Pro Bodies
Update: I’ve found options are very limited because of the R3’s thicker dimensions. The 28-70 f/2.8 is also a fatty so fitting the body and both lenses into that type of bag is going to be challenging, especially with the 70-200mm f/2.8 attached. The Peak Design Everyday Sling V2 10L is also not quite wide enough by about an inch to fit the R3 body turned sideways with lens attached. (interior dimensions of 12.4 x 10.04 x 4.02 inches (31.5 x 25.5 x 10.2 cm).
I’ve read reviews and considered the Tenba SOLSTICE V2 16L SLING BAG and the Lowepro Slingshot Edge 250 AW, but looking at the dimensions, don’t think they will fit that combo either. I really wanted the Tenba to work but not sure it will. (Inside Dimensions 8.5W x 17H x 5D in). The Canon EOS R3 has dimensions of 150 x 142.6 x 87.2 mm (5.91 x 5.61 x 3.43 inches). This includes the width, height, and depth of the camera body.
The MindShift Gear PhotoCross 13 (Interior 14.2 x 9.4 x 5.5" / 36.07 x 23.88 x 13.97 cm) might work but still seems tight.
I’ve landed on likely trying the now discontinued Lowepro SlingShot 302 AW Camera Sling (or 300 AW) if you can find one used: interior dimensions of roughly 11.4 x 5.9 x 10.6 inches (29 x 15 x 27 cm) (WxDxH).***

I’ve got my camera backpacks pretty well covered at this point but I’d like to find a sling style bag for more streamlined carry while shooting sports events. My current kit includes a Canon R3 with the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS Z (my primary combo), Canon RF 2x extender, and Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0 USM IS Z. Both are hefty, sizable lenses. I need to be able to carry my R3 connected to the 70-200mm with optional extender and ideally I’d like room left to store the 28-70mm with a spare battery.
The SLING bag concept attracts me for easy of access to my camera without removing the pack and less bulk/weight than a backpack. I’ve tried the Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L but it’s too tight for the connected camera body and zoom lens and any other accessories/lenses. Great bag but too small since I can barely squeeze in the combo with the hood reversed. I also have the Think Tank Retrospective® 20 V2.0 and it does fit, but I don’t prefer the bulky shape and design though it’s also a quality bag.
I’m currently reading reviews about the Tenba SOLSTICE V2 12L and 16L SLING BAG, and the Lowepro Slingshot Edge 250 AW.
Does anyone have experience with any of these bags or others they would recommend for my needs? I’ve found that full-sized pro bodies with battery grips like my Canon R3 or 1D X MII are challenging to fit.
