Not sure where to post this.

I am thinking about setting up a new computer windows 11 without the microsoft account and using a local account. Would I be missing anything important should I go this route?

wrong forum, but no. You need the MS for office and other products, but one can setup windows 11 without the pesky passkey and other bs ( not recommended if you need privacy and security)- search the internet with the right key-words

I have a MS account but rarely use it.

I just upgraded 2 Win10 computers to Win11 with no problems. My MS account had nothing to do with the upgrade that I am aware of.

When MS made all the platforms, Word, PP....in 1 app...I try to use another platform.

This forum should ok...Fred will move it if he wishes....or if you wish it moved.. PM Fred to move.
Good luck!

I asked for LibreOffice to be installed when I ordered it.

I am totally unfamiliar with this platform. If it works for you GREAT! My point is no need to worry in upgrading to W11 and having a MS account. I rarely use mine. The MS 365 CoPilot is very invasive for me. I just want MS Word that is all! I have a cd of Word from many years ago and it works fine for my needs.
Again good luck!

Interesting, I also have a Microsoft installer saved on this computer. I figured it would not work on windows 11, it goes back to either XP or windows 7. I prefer Word over LibreOffice.

I have the latest Win11 "clean install" sw if you desire. Courtesy of my computer builder, Puget Systems. They are fantastic!
See attachment per Puget Systems directions.

Absolutely not. My W11 is setup with a local account and I'm using the MS Office software fine. Mind you, I never go online to MS cloud storage to store my stuff.

Thanks for helping!

Do you get the updates automatically or do you need to find them on your own? Will I still be able to use windows defender, or do I need a separate virus protection?

My computer maker, Puget Systems, recommends that I use Windows Defender versus my Norton 365 and AntiTraker.
Look here for some info:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/support/guides/the-great-windows-defender-1731/?srsltid=AfmBOoqZmnQcHq7BygI4sVOIhLR0a5cXh3uQUfqyHXxqhcZu33RiDAXG

Not implying this is the way to go BUT it does address some very invasive issues I have with Norton despite all the "add ons" Norton provides to stop tracking and other crap. Norton DOES have a "backdoor" into any of their products despite what they tell the customer. I do NOT use Windows Defender but that may change with my next new computer soon.
Good Luck!

I've got it set up for automatic updates, works fine. I use a combo of Avast free antivirus and Portmaster firewall. Portmaster, by the way, is an incredibly powerful firewall. Probably not a "set and go" solution, but that could be done. It's my personal PC, not a work PC.

I'm not as fancy as @danpbphoto. I built it myself. I won't bore you with specs, unless you want it.

It will work fine with Windows Defender, of course. Although I'd suggest a Windows Defender companion, like Tinywall.

PLEASE! I am not "fancy"! I worked for 40 years, and 6 years military(also a draftee), 2 of which were in combat, and am on a fixed income but my IRA has gone up and I am an extreme conservative when it comes to "my" money. I like my finance graph to go up, even if it is a small amount...It has done that despite a change of administrations policies. I am required "by IRS law" to take a yearly RMD from that IRA. Also if I could build it myself I would but I am not going to try. I grew up with the vacuum tube and crystal radios. My mind does not function properly anyway at my age so I don't tempt fate! So your comment is taken as a comical, in jest let's say. And I dont say that disrespectfully..just sayin'.

Oh please, do tell. I'm not a good one on the OS. I have about 7 Win 10, 7 Linux, 2 Win 11 systems of various types.

I'm actually loathe to update my system, mainly because it's a major headache to re-install everything. I had an old (when I say old, something I built back in 2010-ish) that I used up to last year. Yes, yes, I've had to migrate from Win 7 all the way to 10, so yes, I've had to re-install programs.

I finally decided to upgrade my system when MS clarified the end of Win 10 support AND my old rig refused to run DXO Pureraw and C1, but that was more GPU than CPU related.

I got a (new to me) 10th gen i7 10700K, a full size (ATX) mobo, and 48GB RAM. For me, the full sized mobos are key since it allows a ton of flexibility in helping the rig stay relevant. GPU is the GTX1660ti. I've got 4 HDDs, 1 SSD, and 2 NVMEs as storage. The one gripe that I have with Intel is that it doesn't bifurcate the x16 slot as easily as AMD. I have a riser card that can use 4 NVMEs in parallel but I can only use 2 of the slots on an Intel system (as opposed to all 4 on an AMD system).

It runs decently fast. Pureraw takes about 15-20 secs to process each RAW and C1 processes each raw in 2-3 secs. Video is crazy fast.

I could've gotten something even more powerful but the increase in $ didn't translate well into real-world time savings. I'm not a pro photog so I'm not processing thousands of RAWs every week. I re-used as much of the old rig as possible (case, PSU, HDDs/SSD, etc) so my total outlay was under $300 USD. I'm good for another 5-6 years, I hope!

My new computer will be here tomorrow. I am upgrading from windows 7 (a 10 year old computer that I had a shop build for me) and need all the info or help I can get. I put this off as long as possible. The newer photo software will only work on windows 10 or later. Setting up a new computer is not something I look forward to. Thanks for the help!

After setting it up to your liking, use a 3rd party software to create an image of your C: partition so you can go back to that if necessary. I use Macrium, but ther are others like Acronis, etc.

YES!!! All the EHD's you have, and I have RAID2 Arrays, wont help if you are NOT paying attention and "re-Format" your EHD by mistake! Did that! It was a SanDisk Pro G-RAID Pro 2 and formatting "killed" the formatting so WD sent me a new one!
Phew!!!! 36TB! But I am STILL "moving" files from backups to backups...Redundancy is where I am overconscious!

I'm running about 4-6 sets of data in multiple locations totalling about 1PB of HDDs.
I keep C: lean and mean, with almost nothing else that programs do not force to specific folders. So out of 40TB internal SSDs, C: is only 150GB or so.

I disdain USB drives in general and only use them with laptops on travel. Everything external in the states is 10GbE (mostly DAC SFP+) or 2.5GbE in various arrays. Most of the time you can run Diskpart to clear out drives when the partition table is corrupted. I do not condone proprietary emclosures that do not allow drives to follow industry standards. You need to be able to access the drives if the enclosures fail. I've been there, done that in the 4TB HDD era.
