I just got this wonderful lens, but to my complete surprise and disappointment it came with no case whatsoever! Not even a pouch! Such an expensive "G" lens supplied like this...
Anyway, I am now looking to get a case for it. Any recommendations from other 400-800mm owners?

More cheapness on Sony's part. It is an odd size, nothing quite fits except for expensive carrying bags. Ruggard at B&H is probably your best bet, but that is a backpack.

I think it's a good idea, and in line with Sony's policies on reducing waste.
I (and a great many other people) never used the pouches that Sony supplied with their G lenses (especially the bigger ones), so supplying them was wasteful. They just sat in the box until I sold the lens years later. I do use the cases the come with the GM lenses, by contrast.
I'm using a ThinkTank Glass Limo with mine. I can carry the lens with the body mounted and the hood reversed. The reversed hood fits snugly into the frame at the base of the bag. I really like this option.

Yup, ThinkTank Glass Limo is my choice for that setup.
Which configs are possible in the Limo? Going by the sample pic's in the B&H add, I mean, is it in there by itself like the white Canon 500mm shows, or more like the Nikon 200-400 sample with room for lenses along side of it?
Just curious as I'm still shopping the 400-800mm, and was still considering the Limo over my ThinkTank Holster 150 (old version) for my 200-600mm just to be able to carry other lenses... I see there is a V3 of my Holster 150, but I don't know if it is bigger and will hold the 400-800? I'm pretty sure my old 150 won't?

I use a think tank photo mindshift 26L
It can fit 400-800mm mounted on a body (hood reversed) on one side. And 70-200 or 100-400 mounted on a body on the other. And still room for one more lens, teleconverter, etc
As far as cases and other pouches that come with a lens. I don’t think I’ve ever used one. They just go into the closet along with the box and never sees the light of day until I sell the lens 😄

Eric, you can put the velcrod lens cradle more to one side, creating more room on the other side. Then you can put in more stuff in pouches, like both TCs and/or another body or in this case a 70-200mm f/4 Macro in smallish TT (or other brand's) pouches. Two TCs are in the round pouch. Please, check out the images below.

Perfect answer, exactly what I needed to know and the pictures really help. Thanks for going through the trouble for that!
I'll kinda miss the holster scenario in one respect because it acts as an extra set of hands for lens swaps, but then, if I can't carry extra lenses, it's not really a thing is it? I currently can only carry a tiny prime with me in a side pocket of my ThinkTank 150 where the rain pouch is supposed to go... but it is nice to have my 1.4x or Extension tubes with me in the side pocket, be able to drop the 200-600 in the holster while adding the 1.4x and re-mounting. I do use a strap on the lens, so I could hang it from my neck while I hold the body and add the 1.4x, but it seems like it might be kinda awkward. I will admit this though, the holster doesn't come with a strap, and I'm using a nice Neoprene Optech Extra wide strap from my old medium format, but it still digs into my shoulder a bit... and the 400-800mm is even heavier... maybe using a backpack with both shoulders will alleviate some of that stress?
How do you handle it? I'm guessing you just set the whole bag down on the ground, do the swap, put the back pack back on your back and soldier on?

For moving around at some distance, I use the straps of the TT Glass Limo and carry it like a backpack. The straps are richly padded. And the whole shebang is quite comfortable to be carried that way, within reasons, of course. Yes, I put the bag down and mount the lens. The replacement foot of the lens is a Leofoto and it has a QD socket. I use a Leofoto strap with QD coupler; it is long, sturdy and comfortable, to carry the lens and camera only. Either I carry the empty backpack around or just leave it there at a location I feel comfortable doing so. Since I carry the pouches at my hip using a TT belt, leaving an empty bag behind shouldn't be an issue. Most of the time, I am in the neighborhood anyway.

Are you looking for a case to fit the lens alone for storage?
JJC DLP-8II (size XXXXXL) interior is 140x370mm so it should fit. I have some of the smaller sizes and they are just as good as Lowepro.
I'd prefer manufacturers skip accessories like straps and cases. When you look at the absurd prices Sony charges for replacements of the cases, you have to wonder how much is being added to the lens cost by including them. The thin "case" for the 200-600mm lens costs $122.95 sourced directly from Sony. That's crazy. You can buy much nicer luggage for that price.

I agree with Jeffbuzz (the post above). The JJC cases are great, especially at the price point. Have one for the 200-600, 300 2.8 gm and 400-800 and they are excellent protection.

Never understood why lenses come with a useless pouch.
Tenba Solstice 12L (the first version, backpack, not V2 sling) fits the 400-800 with a camera body and 1.4x attached.
I'll second that recommendation - perfect fit (maybe a little bit snug), but works very well. It's nicely padded and gives good protection to lens and camera. Can be a bit hard to find - I got one very lightly used on MPB for $55.

Thanks but I am looking for a case/pouch when the lens is being stored and not mounted on any camera. I already have some nice backpacks for when I am out in the field.

You have the A1 II I just got mine and I am loving it. I just updated it to the new firmware 3.0 which allows the focus mode dial be programmed in custom modes! I can't wait to try this new feature
I love that the drive dial has a "*" but not the focus mode! Hopefully this will solve this...
