I am wondering if anyone has used and has recent experience using the Canon Loyalty/Upgrade program to purchase an R1. I have never used the program before but I am curious if Canon includes all of its bodies in it.
Recently I used the Loyalty/Upgrade program, but not for the R1. If Canon does offer you the upgrade, since the camera is not on special, one would hope you could received the 20% discount vs. the 10% I received on the on-sale R8. Also, I think Canon would expect you to be upgrading from a pro-level body. Maybe jgoetz4 can chime in.
Best bet is to call and ask. Different things are available for discounts through this program at different times. The newer stuff is sometimes not on there for a year or so. I tried with the R5 back when it was new, but to no avail. The R6 which was its contemporary was on the discount program at that time though.
It nevery used to matter what you turned in, except that it was body for body/kit and lens for lens. Couldn't do lens for body or vice versa. And it did not have to be L for L. So I would imagine it would not have to be 1 series for 1 series either. But let us know when you ask.
As far as I know, you can still give the serial number of either an old (Canon) camera or a broken camera. I once used an old Sure Shot camera for the Loyalty Program. The refurbished deals are usually good around the holidays, with 10% off, however, some cameras are only 5% off. You have to call and talk to a sales rep and find out which cameras get the discounts. My R100 was only $160 after I sold the kit lens. That was a deal

One point of clarification....it did need to be something broken and out of service life. Last one I used was a 5D for the R6. Couldn't today use the R6 against an R5II, for example, since the R6 is still a supported body. But they do not check if it's broken. You just have to certify to them verbally it is. Brian

Brian,
I wonder if you could use the R6 if it was broke, and determined not cost effective to repair, like being dropped in a pool or stepped on by an elephant on a safari?
Jim
I just chatted with Nikiyah @ Canon, and was told that any camera that needs to be repaired can be used on a 20% discount on new cameras or a 10% discount on refurbished cameras. That does include an R6.

Does it include film cameras (I have an AE-1 program that's been sitting on a shelf for 30+ years) and film lenses (I have an FD 50mm f/2.8)?
Can you use multiple cameras/lenses for discounts on multiple new cameras/lenses? I've got a 50D, 7D, and 7DII and a bunch of EF lenses that I was planning on donating, but if I could get 20% off an R1 or the 100-300 and maybe big-white, I might reconsider. I might even consider doing a little business selling new-in-box gear at a discount.

In the past, I have used film cameras and I believe you are limited to 3 transactions per year ( that's what it use to be ) You have to call and speak to a Canon rep for all the current rules and deals.

Yes I think you are right. There is a limit in uses per year, but I'm not sure exactly what it is.
