I do wonder about the utility of the nano glass scree, however. I wonder if the nano glass gives a less sharp image for details because of the light diffusion that makes the nano glass non-reflective. I can almost always position my laptop so that the reflective screen is not picking up other light.

Do a bit of web searching. I've seen a number of comments indicating possible very minor diffusion and an overall significantly improved experience. If you have an Apple Store or other source near you, you could always have a look. Alternatively, Apple gives a "no questions asked" return policy if you don't like the result.

I find it impossible to position my laptop displays for reflection-free viewing when I'm outdoors and in places where I can't control the lighting well. It's a matter of personal taste, I guess. I'm certainly going to have a serious look at it when I get my next MBP.

Yes, if I were using my laptop outside, I would certainly be inclined toward the nano glass screen. I used to prefer Lenovo ThinkPad computers because they came with a matte screen, but that was mainly for text-based work applications. As you say, I should go to an Apple store to look at nano and see what i think. The nano glass does add significantly to the price, however!

I also came from the ThinkPad with matte, as my preference. My MBP is my first Apple product, following my TP Extreme with 4K touch display. I was a bit concerned about the MBP (not offered in nano, back then), and compared it to the nano desktop display in the store. Well, with just a bit the occasional "angle adjust" on the MBP display, I've got along fine without the nano on my MBP. Reflections aren't a problem that has ever had me thinking about the nano display. I certainly wouldn't be swayed to upgrade to a newer MBP ... with the nano display as a strong motivator. Certainly, take a look and folks have thyir own pref's ... here again, Apple's return policy is available if you want take one home for a week or so to get a feel for it, before deciding.

BTW, coming from performance TP's ... the heat dissipation for "on the lap", experience ... the MBP is far and away a cooler running rig.

One more comment on the Air vs MBP, and that's connectivity. The MBP has an extra TB port and a built-in SD reader, along with an HDMI port that the Air does not have. The SD reader may not sound like much, but it's super convenient for images when traveling. My cams use SD and CFx, and I set them to mirror. I always carry a fast dual reader, but even though it's slower transfer than CFx, the onboard SD is so convenient I find myself using it all the time. FWIW...

+1 the card reader and ports make for a different user experience, than the MBA can offer. While not the primary objective of the thread ... sound quality is nicer, too. Just an all around nicer rig ... but, a little bit heavier, than the MBA.

Choose your poison kinda thing.
