p.1 #1 · Oh my…

I’ll hold my hands up
I’m a brand snob.

For years it’s been canon….or nothing !!

Just returned from 5 days in Prague where I took my M50 kit. At the very last second I tossed a sigma ex30mm 1.4 into the case. I got it cheap years back and tbh I thought it was junk…. Hence tossed it into the case!!
Well, it totally surprised me.

Back home I went hunting in the loft
I had a sneaky suspicion I had another sigma that came bundled with a cheap dslr I bought years ago. (400d)

Found it
Don’t laugh…
Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 EX DC

Well I’m not laughing now, I mounted it onto that cheap R100 I snagged cheap last year…

Oh my!!!

With peaking the files (JPEG’s) are lovely.
I’m guessing this is partly because it’s old and the R100 cannot “correct’ the lens faults?

I’m loving the look wide open with the slight vignette, so reminds me of pictures I used to get shooting film.

Nothing more to add really
Just thought I’d share a nice surprise 👍🏻

I haven’t signed up so can’t
- sorry

Ok seems the lens is only shooting wide open ?
Probably explains why it came free?
But, I’ve selected monochrome, with peaking , square 1:1 format
Using pop up flash with minus -2 flash exposure compensation
And have selected the ‘ miniature “ effect in program mode that further reduces the zone of focus.

WOW!!
Oh My GOD!!

I have just stumbled on something extraordinary
Incredible!!!

Maybe I’ll have to sign up so I can share…

Thanks for sharing this. I'd like to make sure I understand. The Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 EX DC is a full-frame lens for EF-mounts. The R100 is a crop-frame body with RF-mount. Are you using a Canon adapter? Does it do autofocus?

I am unfamiliar with "peaking" so I'll have to look it up.

I love knowing about special gear combos so this is interesting to me. The R100 body is not much heavier than my PEN E-P7 body.

I sent you a PM with my email in case you're interested in sharing that way. I'm afraid I might get confused, though, if different body-lens combos are included.

I think it’s just for aps-c sensors
Not sure why the aperture isn’t working?? I’ll clean the contacts tomorrow and try again

Re:the “ miniature “ setting
It’s the first time I’ve used any of these special effects. But combined with the stuck open aperture (2.8) and the miniature style selected the plane of focus is crazy thin.
The insanely shallow zone of focus is amplified by the sigmas ability to get up close at 50mm - without measuring I’d guess the front element is 4” from the subject.

I do have a few RF lenses but I’m getting tired of the ultra sharp heavily corrected shots. The sigma has zero corrections meaning the camera has to rely on the lenses true optical ability… I like it, maybe not for everyone.

Definitely going to test tomorrow after work.

(snip)

DG are fullframes, DC are crops.

Oh, that reminded me actually that I on top of my 3 FF Sigmas which all work on my R6/2, I have Sigma 10-20EX DC which I haven't tried on my R50 so far. But yep, it focuses well.

So my 3rd party EF lenses work on RF adapted.

This is starting to make a tiny bit more sense to me.

Wait.....are you saying that you have to pay the fee for the buy/sell section which includes hosting of images on this site before you can post images on this site now? When did this become the rule?

That certainly would explain some things

It’s been like that since I joined way back when

Forums today are basically highly sophisticated marketing tools designed to subconsciously make you want newer better products. The constant bombardment of ads no longer works. But the subtle yet invasive thought process of hearing/reading of others (in cyberspace) preach on the merits on newer gear has more power than a truck full of free brochures ever had

Once you understand that it becomes crystal clear the REAL role of online forums… regardless of the hobby

Go your own way my friend 👍🏻

You can link to your photos hosted on other sites. I use Flickr for that purpose. You just can't upload photos to this site directly if you don't pay for a membership.
