Nikon actively supports third party adapters for FE mount.
Cheers,
Bernard
Or they just fixed an issue that inadvertently changed mount communication protocols, and after fixing that issue those third party adapters now work again. Probably best to avoid statements of absolute certainty after many were so sure that this wasn't Nikon's fault. Companies make mistakes, it's just nice to see that they reacted quickly and fixed the problem.
I successfully updated 3.0, but unfortunately, my camera went totally dead during 3.01 update. In very last stage a message, Update failed, contact Nikon, popped up. I was in panic, I didn't even take a picture of it.
I turned camera off, then on, no signs of life at all.
I tried to pull battery and card, no help.
This happened two weeks before my vacation, I'm not sure if it's gonna be fixed until then.
This is sick!
P.S. I was updating it without lens attached to the camera , I did the same with 3.0.
Interestingly Canon have recently pulled their latest R1 and R5ii updates due to bugs and many Sony owners are begging for an update to an A1ii battery drain issue which Sony is yet to acknowledge. Given the unheard of number of faultless upgrades the Z system has benefited from to date, we shouldn't whine unduly about this rapidly rectified mis-tep.
I'm happy that not only did Nikon fix this issue pretty quickly, but the fact that I could roll the 3.0 FW back to 2.1 FW when I discovered my 50-400 didn't focus anymore after the update.
It seems to be, I'm the only one out of luck with this update.
I dropped my Z8 to Nikon service yesterday, let's see what comes out of it.
I still can't believe the firmware update can shot it down dead, but obviously bad things happen.
I dont think the firmware update was the issue. You stated I took the lens off during update, I did the same with 3.0.. Since v3.01 specifically addressed communication with lenses, when you removed the lens during the update you broke the communication with the lens and thus prevented the firmware from completing. All firmware update warnings state NOT to touch the camera during the update, I suggest heeding that the next time you do an update.

That may be the reason, but where do you read , "do not take your lens off prior to update 3.01", or even harder, "you must not update your camera with 3.01 without Z-mount lens attached to it".
"Do not update the camera firmware with lenses other than Z-mount NIKKOR lenses or mount adapters other than FTZ II/FTZ attached; failure to observe this precaution could result in camera malfunction."
That statement isn't excluding camera without lens attached, it's pointing not to have 3rd party lenses attached, IMO.
If it's so critical, it should highlight that situation as well.
It's too late now, but I learned my lesson, no FW update at least a month after release.
I updated 3.0 without lens for the first time in my life, because some people reported issues with lens attached.
I went with the same logic into 3.01, but it was fatal mistake.
I usually don't have a lens on the camera when updating firmware and have never had any case of fw not going through. I did observe some settings changes as a side effect of the fw update. 3.01 works fine with my camera although no lens was attached during the update.
I am sure Nikon can fix the camera.

Thanks for sharing it!
Equipment fails, then it gets fixed, camera is under warranty, and it's in good hands now.
I shared it for others to be aware of it, if there is anything to learn out of it.
If I read this posted by someone else before I did update, I would definitely avoid update without lens.
Unless you meant something else, you clearly said you took the lens off during the update. If you did this that could be the reason the camera stopped working.

OMG, I should've read that before I posted it, I was in hurry, sorry.
It should be, I was updating it without lens attached to the camera.
It would be really radicolusly stupid to take the lens off during update.
Thank you for pointing to it, it was completely misleading.
I had an odd thing happen while on a pretty big week long job after updating to 3.0. When using my 70-200 2.8 Z in vertical orientation, the focus would not stick on a face / eye when holding the camera in vertical position. It would either not attain sharp focus or not hold it like when using it horizontally.
When I swapped to the Z9 for exactly the same shot, it held it fine. So I just updated to 3.01 and hopefully this fixes it. Bizarre....
