You can't change the menu language in the JP version (I asked in 4 stores), unless Sony makes an international model which sometimes the bigger chain retailers offer (but usually not on current models).

Will be in Japan in 2 months. Hope someone can confirm by then if they were able to change menu's to English.
It seems unlikely that direct conversion of the menu language will be possible. However, anyone who wants to save some cash could simply photograph each page of the camera's Japanese menu system and use a phone app like Google Translate on each page. Once the camera is set up to the user's taste, perhaps only a few frequently-changed options could be memorized and accessed through something like the "My Menu" feature.

The RX1R3 sold in Japan doesn't have any menu that would allow user to change User Interface language and it's available with Japanese UI only (like most Sony cameras sold in Japan market). I've also personally checked this from the Japanese model's help guide and by referring to a demo camera at Sony showroom.
The cameras sold as "Overseas models" in Japan don't include any newer cameras than A7CII and A7CR at the moment (https://www.sony.jp/overseas/en/), and those are typically only available in very limited locations and the prices are noticeably higher than typical prices for local Japanese models.
Basically one could learn to use the Japanese Menus if they are willing to put in enough effort, as the menu structure is exactly the same as in Sony Cameras in other markets (just with some menus like language menu and PAL/NTSC selection menu missing) and e.g. English Help Guide could be referred to, along with smartphone camera based translation tools.

I know about this as it's the case with most or all Sony cameras made for Japan market. But there is a hack to replace just the menu as shown in this video.

The hack is out there but it's mentioned that "Devices based on the CXD90045 and CXD90057 architectures are not compatible, since their firmware is cryptographically signed." and the latest models are not found in the supported models list. But some users claim to have managed to apply the hack (maybe with some variation) on some newer models that are not in the supported devices list. I don't have personal experience with this current version of the hack.

If I pick one up in a few weeks in Japan, I'll try the Linux bootable method since it bypasses the unnecessary drivers Zadig thing.
Seems like just a service menu toggle, so if you revert the setting and reset camera before service, it shouldn't affect warranty.
I used to do this with Panasonic cameras, and completely didn't think to try it on Sony's newer cameras

Reports seem like the Linux bootable method was successful with A7RV, A7CR, and A6700, so it should theoretically work since Bionz XR ~ CXD90057

I think it's not completely clear the way it's written, but it's the more complex hacks that don't work with newer cameras (encrypted firmware).
Service menu access seems like an open gate left by Sony for technicians, so it should not be affected.

Despite my better judgement, I purchased the RX1R III and couldn't be happier. Even though it lacks some significant features, for me it's size and IQ are more than worth the tradeoffs. For those looking for a 3rd party Thumb Grip, the JJC TA-GR3 works perfectly. It does make utilizing the PASM dial a little difficult since it doesn't fold but I normally just keep it on manual anyway so it doesn't bother me.

I am using Lensmate X100V/VI thumb grip and it is a perfect fit. It is also foldable like the Sony version. I like the Lensmate grips as the thumb support is bigger. Only problem it is out of stock, so you need to find it used.

I'm constantly searching for this answer almost daily. No luck so far. I'll be in Japan in 8 days and will pick one up only if there is a hack to change menu to English.

Honestly, it’s exciting to see the RX1R line return. A full-frame 35mm f/2 in something this compact feels like the closest thing we get to a digital ‘everyday carry’ with real image integrity. The 61MP sensor makes this way more than a niche camera.

How does everyone feel about the mk3? My friend is in Tokyo, and she is going to Map Camera anyways. I thinking about picking one up as it's like $3300ish there. I'm going to replace Q3 with it. I have the M system, the Q3 is wonderful as a travel camera, but it's significantly bigger and heavier than Rx1r.
I just wish it had a tilt lcd. It really is a great feature for travel camera. Also the lack of weather seal bothers me. The 2 mk2s I had all eventually had sensor dust.

I love my mk3. I can't complain for the price I paid at Map camera where I also traded both my Ricoh GRiii and iiix. For me, I'm so used to Ricoh GRiii for so many years. So, lack of tilt screen is not an issue. The autofocus is so good compared to the the RX1RII and Ricoh's. Hope Match Technical releases a thumb grip for mk3 like they did for mk2. For now liking the Sony leather case I bought which add a decent grip

Mk2 was my travel camera before Q3. Size difference is big with Q3 and also 33mm vs 26mm lenses. MK3 af is great. Animal eye af is still not there for Leica. Also, Leica lens reduces to f2.8 for macro. I would have like that older lcd tilt screen on mk3...
I also like that I can use Freewell 1.5x X100 teleconverter for portraits which makes it 50mm equivalent plus the crop options directly on the camera...Teleconverter vignettes for landscape shots due to the rear circle blocking, but it is sharp.

I was testing last weekend for the landscapes, but I deleted the shots as these were hand held shots from the window... Portrait shots were with the pets and hard to know which one as I was trying different options including the Ricoh 1.5x and Neewer 1.5x. Ricoh needs the rear bevel behind the lens to be cut to fit, and it covers without the vignette, but it is not sharp around the edges... It performs better on Q3 43 as it is designed for GR3X 40mm lens. Neewer is very close to Freewell and cheaper. It comes only in silver, so silver reflection was shining back on the window shot.. Online they say they are same converter lens, so it might be even lens variation as they have the same rear ring that looks like from the same manufacturer. However, Freewell seemed a little better on the edges for the landscape and you can have black or silver option.. Again both vignettes similarly for landscapes.. I don't know if you need any specific shots eg pets, flowers or landscapes, so please let me know.
On the wide side I tried Ricoh GW-3 on mk2 and GW-4 on mk3. GW-4 is dreamy wide open, but sharpens down stopped down... I had some car show photos with that when my dog was pulling me as usual... I have to try GW-3 on mk3...

I was on the fence about the 3 but glad I did it. I miss the tilt screen, too and the IBIS on the s9 has spoiled me, but it's a fantastic camera.
Do you have any examples of the teleconverter in use? I'm tempted after this post!
