Not exactly sure what you are trying to imply here

I'm suggesting that price and actual value are two different things, and that Leica also uses mixed calculations, so that one product line partially cross-finances another. It's not for nothing that Leica regularly surveys its customers to find out what they would be willing to pay for what. In any case, I would assume that Leica earns significantly more on an SL than on an M, even though the M is more expensive.

Lecia prices are certainly determined in a large part by brand value and perceived value rather than the manufacturing cost of the product. So the price of a product in Leica lineup is an indicator of its 'status' in the lineup.

For example comparing 'Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH' at $6845 vs 'Leica Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens' at $2885 - I can bet without knowing anything else that the 14-24mm f2.8 would be a rebranded Panasonic whereas 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 would be a Lecia lens.

Anyways, I just stated my opinion - maybe I am completely wrong. We can get back to RX1R III now

The fact that the Q3 seems far more reliable than your typical "Leica" camera is another data point to suggest it's not actually a Leica

Leica's M old-style cameras are less reliable, and more costly, because they are mechanically complicated. Partnering with Panasonic for the Q3 likely lowers the Q3 cost, and that's a good thing.

And here I thought this thread was about the newly released RX1R3 camera.

Here, have another review where the end is daydreaming about other, better thought out, more interesting, less expensive cameras Sony could have made

I got my RX1R III last Friday and took it on a short trip over the weekend. I really enjoyed using it — the compact, unassuming design helped me stay under the radar and get a few candid shots without drawing much attention.

I’ve long been fascinated by the RX1 series and came close to buying the RX1R II multiple times. Now, with the III, I finally get to experience that exceptional lens paired with some welcome modern upgrades. USB-C charging while driving, more streamlined controls, and better overall usability.

That said, I won’t recommend this camera to anyone, my A7RV and Zf are definitely a better camera in many regards.

My only regret is timing. If it had come out last year, I would’ve picked it up while I was in Japan. With some working knowledge of Japanese, I could’ve navigated the menus and settings of the Japanese version while enjoy the $3650 pretax price there.

I will be in Japan in November and still debating if I should get the camera there. I hope I can find an English menu version at that kind of price. I bought a used RX1Rii just a few months back and invested $150 on Thumbs Up Grip and another $70 on a leather jacket case :-(.

Wow, that is a much nicer price ($3650) indeed! That is actually reasonable.

Don't forget that you're going to have to pay a substantial duty (and probably some fees) on the camera when you return to the US. And the procedure for actually clearing customs with the camera could be quite a PITA. Recommend doing your homework so you know what you're getting into.

Given the current situation, bringing items back to the US from abroad is much less appealing than it used to be.

... is there still anyone in here discussing the Sony RX1R III?

I've had it for five days and have been very pleased with it. One of my biggest concerns, after all the negative "reviews" was the lack of stabilization combined with the 61mp sensor. In practice, it has not been an issue at all. I did turn on active stabilization even though I don't shoot video. I had read comments here and there that the video active stabilization could help (how, I don't know) with still shots. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, but I've had virtually no problems with camera shake. I've been using auto ISO, which could help. I should try setting a fixed ISO and see how it does.

Why is that? Can't you bring it in declaring as your personal camera?

I’ve experienced no issues with stability either. I often shot my RX1R II at 1/30th and had no issues, but I’ll admit that I was concerned when I learned they moved onto the 61mp sensor. I did notice that the shooting formula in aperture mode has been altered. Set to “standard”, the shutter defaults to 1/125th. When set to “Slow” it defaults to 1/60th. I haven’t checked yet but I believe my A7RV sets to 1/60th slower in each of these settings.

I recently traveled to Europe and came back with my camera gear - no issues at all. This is a non issue unless you are bringing back large suitcases of stuff or get unlucky / randomly searched.

This depends on whether you wish to take the moral/ethical high ground and declare. If not, it will be a non issue walking through customs.

Well sure - lying and disregarding the law is always on the table. Risks accepted and taken.

But many aren't comfortable with that for a multitude of reasons.

I think it's going to be very hard to find an English menu version at similar price in November. I've never seen English menu versions sold at similar price as local models in Tokyo as new, and usually the price gap has been significant. I always buy local models of Sony cameras myself since I don't want to pay a lot of extra for international models (and I have enough Japanese skills to get by with the Japanese menus).

Sony sells international models of some of their cameras directly but prices are usually not comparable to local models and available stores are mostly Sony's own retail outlets (https://www.sony.jp/store/retail/tourist/). I've also seen some international models at Akihabara's Yodobashi Camera in the past. Usually new models become available in the international model lineup later than the local version's relese date. Also, these stores don't sell local models at same prices as the quoted best price ($3650 tax free) either.

I've seen 2nd hand English menu versions of some Sony cameras in camera stores that sell used models (like Map Camera) on a couple of occasions but not often at all and chances of finding such are better with older camera models.

I did the language hack on my old cameras (A7R, A7II). Back then the available solution was quite straightforward and easy.
The current method for later cameras seems somewhat more tricky and there's conflicting info regarding whether it works with some of the very latest cameras or not. I haven't tried it on my more recent cameras, partly because I can get along with the Japanese menus as well.

Yes, that's why it's worth trying for those visiting Japan .
It did work with A7RV and A7SIII, which obviously are not as new as RX1R3, but use similar platform.
