p.1 #1 · How does the Thypoch 75 f/1.4 perform on an unmodified Sony sensor?

Anybody have any experience with using the Thypoch Simera 75 f/1.4, which is currently only available in Leica M mount on an umodified Sony sensor? I trust both Fred's and Bastian's reviews, but they suggest conflicting information. Fred who compares the lens' performance on a Leica M11 and a Sony A7r III reports that the lens has no performance decrement on the Sony. Bastian who tests the lens on a Leica M10 and a Sony A7r II reports that the lens doesn't perform as well in the mid zone on the Sony. It is unusual for Fred and Bastian to report different results like they do for this lens. Does anyone else have any information? Could the discrepancy be a difference in the specific copies? Could the discrepancy be in how the lenses were adapted? Any thoughts about how this lens performs on an unmodified Sony would be much appreciated. I would be using it on a Sony A7r V, so a 60 MP sensor.

I noticed this too Steve. From time to time, I have noted discrepancies in their testing results.

From looking at Fred's and Bastian's crops, I noticed that Fred has tested the two lenses in significantly different lights--looks at the axial CA WO on the a7r2 versus the m11 when both are WO. There's noticeably more on the a7r2 and the light is harsher as the sky is blown out mostly, which very well could be revealing more definition on the a7r2 crops in the foliage, making it look better artificially. When at all possible, I always take my crops from the same light at the same time--I don't even take the camera off the tripod, just swap the lens.

I also think Fred has a slight misfocus on his Simera testing, or there was a little FC going on. On his a7rii corner crops WO, the absolute corners (the buildings) are not in focus but the trees just before them are. On his m11, the buildings are in focus, while the trees just before them are not.

I think that might be some of the discrepancy we are seeing. So in this case, I lean on Bastian's results. There is also a large differential as Bastian in on a 24mp Leica and Fred is using a 61mp m11. The stock A7r2 is the constant. The files below are from Fred's review and I used from my thoughts above. I did not bother to go through all the stops and distances.

Thanks Nehemiah for your analysis. I think it makes sense. The difficulty is that in neither comparison is the magnification of the images held constant. In Fred's test he goes from a higher resolution camera (M11) on Leica to a lower resolution camera (A7r II) on Sony. He doesn't see a difference, but the lower magnification of the Sony camera will make it harder to see a difference and in addition as you point out the difference in light/exposure may make it harder to see a difference that is actually there.
Bastian's comparison has the reverse problem he goes from a lower resolution camera (M10) on Leica to a higher resolution camera (A7r II) on Sony. He sees a difference, but the higher magnification on the Sony camera might simply be showing weaknesses of the lens that weren't evident at the lower resolution. I would love to see Bastian's results with the Sony files downsized to the 24MP of the M10 files. (A similar thing could be done with Fred's files either upscaling the Sony images or downsizing the Leica images, but given that the light was different the comparison would still have that problem).

Without such comparisons I am left a bit uncertain. Still my take is similar to yours. There is likely a subtle reduction in performance of the lens on an unmodified Sony sensor. That said, I think you will primarily see it at higher magnification and when the image is downsized even to 24 MP the effect will be very subtle and only visible is careful side by side comparisons and not too relevant for real world shooting.
