About the Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.5 "Z21" lens:

The new Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.5 "Z21" just arrived, and it has deep roots in optical history. It pays tribute to the rare and highly desired Angenieux 50mm f/1.5 Type S21 from the 1950s. This was one of the earliest lenses to offer an f/1.5 maximum aperture, pushing the limits of optical design at the time. The Z21 follows the original 6-element layout while incorporating a few modern refinements, including improved coatings. The goal was to preserve the signature vintage rendering while enhancing contrast, line sharpness, and mechanical precision.

Initial Thoughts:

The Z21 is equipped with a modified double-Gauss design with six elements in four groups, featuring in-house manufactured, lanthanide-infused glass elements made specifically for this lens. It covers full-frame and extends to digital sensors up to 44x33mm (medium format), a significant expansion over the original S21's image circle. With this wider coverage, vignetting is surprisingly well controlled for such a fast lens on the Leica M. Another key update is the native Leica M mount with rangefinder coupling. The original S21 was never produced in M mount but was instead offered in mounts like LTM, Exakta, and Leica M39.

The lens focuses down to 0.7m, a noticeable improvement over the original’s 1-meter minimum focus distance. It features a 10-blade aperture mechanism with a range from f/1.5 to f/22 and distinct clicks at each full stop. The spacing between clicks is wider at larger apertures and becomes progressively shorter toward the smaller f-stops, similar to how cine lenses are designed. The aperture ring rotates smoothly and feels solidly built.

Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.2 "1966" Titanium | Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.5 "Z21" | Light Lens Lab 50mm f/2 SP2

It mounts using a standard Leica M bayonet and accepts E52 filters. In my experience, a lens hood is neither included nor necessary, as the front element is deeply recessed within the barrel, offering natural protection against flare.

Front element is deeply recessed

The focus ring on my copy turns smoothly, though there is a slight amount of play in the movement. It's minimal and doesn't affect usability, and most importantly, the lens focuses accurately with the rangefinder on my M cameras. Visually, it feels like handling a jewel. The glossy black paint and chrome accents complement my Leica M10-R Black Paint so well, it looks like they were made to go together.

Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.5 "Z21" at ~3m focus position

Build quality is excellent, featuring a lightweight aluminum alloy body that feels solid and precise in hand. The lens measures 64.2mm in length and 60.7mm in diameter, weighing 318 grams (measured). It comes in a high-gloss black paint finish with chrome accents, with a matte black version available on request. The focus mechanism uses a solid brass helicoid and operates with smooth, deliberate resistance.

To get a broader sense of performance, I'll also be adapting this lens to a Sony body to evaluate compatibility and rendering on a high-resolution mirrorless sensor.

Sony A7CR paired with the Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.5 Z21 using the Voigtlander close-focus adapter. You can see the purple coating reflections in the front element.

This lens is not designed for clinical sharpness or modern optical perfection. Sharpness is strongest around the center area, roughly covering the rule of thirds, so placing your subject within this zone yields a sharp image, though not razor sharp by today's standards. The lens leans into character, especially when used wide open, producing a gentle glow and smooth falloff that define the classic Angenieux signature..

Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.2 "1966" Titanium | Light Lens Lab 50mm f/1.5 "Z21" | MS Optics 50mm f/1 ISM | Light Lens Lab 50mm f/2 SP2

I would describe the rendering as painterly, with strong outlining, noticeable swirling, and well-defined structure. So far, I have not noticed much flare, but I will explore that further as the review continues. When stopped down, image quality improves noticeably, offering a balanced mix of expressive rendering and practical sharpness for more predictable compositions.

PS: The images of the lens and the lens mounted on the camera were taken with my Sony A7R II and Batis 135/2.8. I used the Ricoh Positive Film Cobalt simulation for processing, which I've really come to appreciate. The deep blacks, rich colors, and smooth tonal transitions make it stand out. In my opinion, it's Ricoh’s best profile.

Samples 1: Leica M10-P

All images were shot wide open at f/1.5 under various lighting conditions and subject distances. I used the M10-P for all the samples.

Post-processing was minimal...just a bit of added sharpening and slight exposure adjustment. I used the Adobe Standard profile to give a clearer view of the lens's color rendering.

I wanted to point out that the center region can be sharp enough for most subjects, especially at closer distances, while there tends to be more glow at longer focus distances.

Samples 2: Adapted to Sony A7CR

All images were shot wide open at f/1.5 under different lighting conditions and subject distances, except for the sunstar shots which was taken at f/11. I used the Z21 adapted to the Sony A7CR for all the samples.

Post processing was minimal with just a touch of sharpening and slight exposure adjustment. I used the Adobe Standard profile to better show the lens’s natural color rendering. This set continues the visual direction of Sample 1 but explores the lens’s character a bit further.

Some of the sample images also highlight how the lens handles flare. I think many will appreciate the rainbow ring it produces, which adds a unique character, though it seems better controlled than the original Angenieux in terms of veiling flare. One of the shots shows how well-defined the sunstars can be at f/11, which seems to be the optimal setting, but the lens also produces attractive 10-point rays at f/5.6, f/16, and f/22.

I also used a Voigtlander close focus M to E adapter to go beyond the native 0.7m MFD, and the lens held up well even on a high resolution modern sensor.

clearly a chacun son gout. For my taste, this lens is a non-starter. I find the bokeh weird, unnatural and highly distracting.I much prefer look of the Summilux 50/1.4 pre-asph v 3 (of which I'm still in the hunt and hope to have by Christmas).

Totally understandable. These kinds of lenses really come down to personal taste.

I see them as having distinct imperfections, and I tend to be drawn to certain types of flaws that give a lens personality. In the case of the Z21, it's clear that if you're after a cleaner and less distracting rendering without swirl or unusual bokeh behavior, this one probably will not be a good match. That said, I hope you find that Summilux pre-asph v3 soon. It has a beautiful and very different character of its own.

Although the Z21 and the 50/1.4 pre-asph Lux share the same focal length and similar maximum aperture, I don't really see them as competitors. The Z21 leans into a more painterly rendering with swirl and glow wide open, while the Summilux v3 aims for a more classic Leica look with smoother transitions and gentler background blur in comparison. One thing that stands out with the Z21 is its lower axial CA and very low vignetting compared to the Summilux, which might be appreciated depending on how and what you shoot.

The bokeh is not an absolute representation of the lens capabilities in each picture.
As it is for most lenses, I feel there are variations depending on the scenario.
The bokeh in the most close up shots is less attractive if there are only far objects behind the point of focus.
With busy bokeh or modern buttery ones, it tends to not be that pretty. Modern ones won’t be distracting though but won’t be that pleasant either I feel.
In the other shots I find the texture of the oof area quite to my liking, I’m bias but there are some in-between.

long story, but my friend has a v3 (unfortunately silver, but at this point I'm willing to deal with the added weight) with lens separation as confirmed by Ye. It's on its way to Wetzlar to see if they'll fix it. If they do I'll have it in the 8 or so months it takes for repair to be completed and sent back as a lens that hopefully will never again separate. Fingers crossed.

I hate people saying beauties are in the eyes of beholders. It's not true. Beauty is absolute, and it's not personal taste.
The bokeh rendering of this lens is UGLY. So ugly that I can't unsee what I have seen. Damn.

I get that the rendering from the Z21 won't appeal to everyone. It definitely leans into imperfection, and I think that's part of why some people enjoy it so much, especially since it stays fairly faithful to the original 1950s Angenieux S21 look. There's a certain character and history to the way it draws that many photographers have appreciated for decades.

If it's not your thing, that's completely fair. But calling the bokeh objectively ugly or mediocre feels a little harsh, especially with something as subjective as rendering and character. Different people connect with different aesthetics, and that is part of what makes photography, or any artistic medium, interesting in the first place.

Strong opinions are always welcome, of course, but it helps to keep things respectful so people feel comfortable sharing different perspectives.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I value your opinion since I have an idea of your taste in lenses. You are right that the bokeh changes depending on the scene and subject distance, especially with older designs like this that do not smooth everything like modern glass.. That structure from outlining, swirling, and glow is part of their unique charm. The Z21 really stays true to the original S21's signature, so it makes sense you appreciate that in some shots since it is basically the same optical design. You do not need to soften your view just because others are harsh. Everyone sees these lenses differently and that is what makes talking about them so interesting.

I am interested in vintage cinema lenses and have been waiting for this lens since it was announced. This lens has a unique rendering for creating atmospheric portraits and in general for artistic photography close to pictorial. This lens is for artists. For those who see elusive images and strive to capture them. Not for those who look for sharpness, detail and a literal reflection of reality in photographs.

i could see a use for this lens to create a surreal, painterly image. Although not for me, if that's the look someone wants perhaps it's worth a spin.

I wonder did the original Angenieux render the same, or was it more controlled.

I haven't tried the original myself, but the samples from LLL were enough to convince me. To my eye, the Z21 shows better center resolution, so we might see a more noticeable drop-off toward the corners with the LLL version. At first, I thought the LLL had more controlled flare, which wouldn't be to my liking...but to my surprise, it actually produces a good amount of veiling and characterful ghosting/rainbow flare, which I really enjoy. You can see some of that in the samples I've posted so far.

Another advantage of the LLL is that it shows lower vignetting, since it's capable of covering medium format sensors without any hard mechanical cutoff.

If I were to use this lens I would picture myself in the 1950's with an M11 or SL3 and say to myself I am lucky to have an f 1.5 lens and take it from there.

Too bad we NOW have so many choices-perhaps too many.

Nevertheless, I have one coming to try when I dream the of the 1950's.

I have used the original lens on my M11- It wasn't my cup of tea but its a very unique lens.

My guess is the bokeh on this one would translate my better onto film backs vs digital but never tested it. Great review so far though Fred!

Since it will seem to work on a 44x33 sensor it is worth a try and then try it on a film Hasselblad if an adapter exists. Sure you will get vignetting, but it's worth a try.

Better than that try it on an M6 or other M mount film camera.

Fred,
Yes my copy of the new LLL Z21 50 1.5 has shipped but oddly it is coming from Canada and not directly from China, possibly to avoid the current uncertain tariff situation? It shows it is due to arrive this Wednesday or Thursday.

On my original Angenieux S21 the colors appear far more pastel and "French" and not nearly as crisp as your photographs you kindly have shared, nor the comparisons I am assuming LLL supplied of the coffee machine comparisons. My copy is an Exacta mount and with the M bayonet adapter I purchased it is next to impossible to accurately focus it on my Leica M rangefinder bodies so I only use it on mirrorless cameras, Sony, Nikon Z with beautiful results. It is a very interesting lens to process though as if you get carried away with the contrast slider especially the out of focus rendering becomes even more exaggerated and artistic. Shot SOC the colors are simply wonderful but again nothing as realistic as your photographs, which I am suspecting could be due to LLL's modern coatings and even "possibly" a difference in glass materials.

FYI, through a dealer I know in Hong Kong told me a few years back that apparently Angenieux did produce a very small quality of the S21 50 1.5 in M mount but these are extremely rare and if even on the market prices are in the high teens meaning $15,000++.

When my copy does arrive I will be keen to compare the two and if I can make some concise back to back comparisons I will certainly post them. The original Angenieux S21 lens is beautifully built and my copy at least still works flawlessly so here's hoping Light Lens Lab has continued to modernize their manufacturing techniques into more long term screw and threaded construction.

Thanks for putting this thread together as so far I feel Light Lens Lab deserves our support for the efforts they are investing in reproducing some of the more famous lenses from the past, and thus far seemingly quite representative if the originals.

That's how it was shipped to me. If it was sent through DHL, keep an eye on the tracking. You might need to pay a small fee to have the lens released.

It would be great to see some comparison shots with the lens adapted to your Sony or Nikon. I had originally used a custom color profile for my sample images but I agree with you that it affected the lens's natural color rendering (It added too much contrast). Since the goal is to show how the lens reproduces color, I went back and updated all my samples using the default Adobe Standard profile without changing any other settings except for sharpening. This should give a more accurate idea of how the lens performs straight out of the camera.

It would be great if you could post a photo showing the actual lenses side by side. Is your S21 copy the glossy black version?
