p.1 #11 · Trading M11 + two M9s for M10r + M10m ? | |
A few considerations come to mind.
First, you're starting to bring a dedicated mono camera into your fold, where you've not got that in your current three bodies. I'm "assuming" this is going to be your first monochrome camera. That said, I don't think the considerations for the finesse of nuance between the profiles in the M11 vs. M10M are worth really giving much weighting of consideration to.
Imo, the matter of your choices can be sliced / diced into a few different viewpoints. Figuring out which one matches your temperament will be the tricky part.
Still on the matter of the dedicated mono ... the Q2M, is an attractive rig, but now you're locked in to 28mm (which is fine, just different from an M10M) at 47MP. The shutter release on your M's has a very tactile feel to it. The Q (because it is a leaf shutter, which I dig) has a more electronic button feel to it (which I don't dig). Also, you'll be on an EVF (a nice one, imo in my Q2), instead of an RF.
Then, there's the prospect of the M246 for a dedicated mono. It is only 24MP (vs. 40MP of the M10M) for some lighter file sizes, and uses a larger battery than the M10 Series M's. The body is a bit thicker, but not terribly so. The sensor performance is just a smidge behind the M10M, but it's going to be significantly difference vs. your M9 ... you'd be splittin' hairs vs. the M10M (imo). Point being that if a dedicated mono is in your future, your choices of M11M, M10M, Q2M and M246 are on the table. For the price point of the M246 (vs. M10M / Q2M), it might be something to enter your discussion about a dedicated mono. To which, I think you have to ask yourself is that going to be your main workhorse, or an occasional use rig, in mono ... or a desire to dabble in new waters.
Moving on to the M10R (I have the M10R / Q2 / M246), it is a nice rig, and I'm not particularly drawn to the M11, but there are a couple diff's worth noting. The M10R will not have USB-C charging, and it is a bit smaller MP count ... same 40MP vs. 61MP discussion as above. The sensor profile will be a smidge different. Of course, if you are paired with the M10M, then your battery management is standardized. OTOH, if you keep your M11 (USB-Charging) and pair it with an M246, Q2M or M10M you'll have different batteries, but the USB-C charging will help offset the diff, a bit too.
At the end of the day ... I'd not look at what the value of the trade is. I'd look at what is your END GAME of where you WANT to be. If that is one for color, one for mono ... great. If that is I'd like like to play with mono for a bit, that's a different matter. If you want a fixed 28, that's one thing, too. Knowing what your end game is, will be key to assessing the value of the moves you make to get there.
I know Allen isn't keen on the M11. I've not got a strong desire for the M11. He's shooting the regular M10 (with his M10M) and I'm shooting the M10R with my M246. Each of us has one body that is color, one that is mono. The difference for Allen and I are that he has his 40MP in mono, 24MP in color. I have my 40MP in color, my 24MP in mono ... reversal from each other. His batteries are the same, mine are different, but my M246 does use a larger battery (splittin' hairs a bit).
For you ... what is the COMPELLING reason that you want to GET RID OF your M11?
Maybe, you should just consider sticking with your M11 and simply adding a dedicated mono. Which dedicated mono ... M246 (bargain entry), M10M, Q2M, M11M ... could vary. With your M11 USB-C charging, the matter of battery management for the pairing of M10R / M10M isn't crucial. An M10R / M10M pairing is a great match (both 40MP) and shared battery. But, the real question comes back to understanding what YOUR END GAME is desired to be. Or, are you simply exploring right now (been there, done that, might do it again).
M11 + M246
M11 + Q2M
M11 + M10M
M11 + M11M
M10R + M10M
I'm a fan of my M10R, but ... I'm still not sure I understand what the compelling reason for dumping your M11 is? The metering approach is different, as is the shutter mechanism, but is this a compelling problem that you've been experiencing from the M11? Folks can make all kinds of rationale for why they prefer one rig vs. another ... but, what is it about the M11 rig that is causing YOU grief? And, given that you've mentioned you like your M9's ... the M246 probably should be (imo) on your radar for a dedicated mono. Unless you want a Q ... M11 + M246 might be worth considering. Plenty of ways to skin this cat, just gotta think it through to where you want to be in the end.
Anyway, just some .02 brain fodder to toss on the fire.
