I posted a similar question elsewhere on the forum and not had any responses
We are booked to fly to Prague 2nd week in July for 5days
I’ve been mulling it over constantly what best to take…gone from one extreme to the other… from a iPhone to a bag with 2 bodies / 3 zooms
Neither really appeals
The iPhone whilst great for off the cuff snaps will not really deliver should I want to enlarge and print. Likewise the thought of swapping lenses in a city packed with tourists at the height of the season doesn’t sound too relaxing to me.
I originally was set on taking 2x Pentax K3 with lenses. Spent the past 3-4wks sat outside after work getting familiar…absolutely amazing camera….
That is until I pick up my 6D…
I’ve never felt such a huge attachment to a camera like I do towards the 6D. The files to me are just gorgeous 🥰
So
I’m guessing the 6D & 50/1.8 stm might be too restricting
The 40 is slower and neither wide enough or long enough
At a push I could take either 28-135is usm or 24-105 stm
But I will then be forced to carry a bag of some sort.
The iPhone is roughly 28mm
Do you think 28 on phone and 50 on 6D will work??
My #1 goal is the huge Hercules stone statues found throughout Prague's old buildings depicted holding up the frontage.
Plus grabshots of partner and son and general holiday snaps.
You can actually just carry the camera on a strap without a bag during the day. I usually have a regular zoom on the camera (SL1, 17-40mm), then I put one extra lens on a small pouch on my belt (100mm) or even somewhere else like a baby stroller. No bag needed other than moving to a hotel etc.
Be ready for million people in Prague. Went there 3 times at least in last years. Last time in December. So if you want nice photos it must be sunrise only
I would take 24- 105 but also something very wide like 16 - 35

“ Be ready for million people”…..
Sounds horrendous 🫣
Making me now consider just taking the canon S120 P&S?? 24-120 zoom

No.
It’s the 50mm I think is unsuitable. If you’re trying to take a picture of a building at ground level you have to step so far back that you won’t be able to keep it clear of people. At the same time, it’s too short to take pictures of details above street level because you have to shoot up at a crazy angle.
The phone is probably good for photos of your family in Prague.

Do you mean the baroque caryatids and atlantides? I usually use my 70–200mm f/4 IS for this kind of thing. Stand across the street and shoot over the heads of the crowds.
Well got home from work
And once again went out into the garden comparing…
The 6D viewfinder is gorgeous big bright and contrasty I tried both 17-40 & 70-300 nano
Both were brilliant. Took loads of test shots
Then went to view on the laptop.. besides my own errors both lenses were great
I thought job done, sorted…that’s what I’m taking…
I then opened the folder with the Pentax K3 and smc 18-135 wr
And the shots just blew me away. Colours are gorgeous, lens is contrasty
The K3 & 18-135wr is FULLY WEATHER SEALED.. FULLY!!
Checked the forecast for Prague next week… Rain!!
K3 is aps-c 6D is FF
Yet the bodies are roughly the same with the K3 being heavier
The 18-135 equates to 28-200 in FF speak
The K3 has a fantastic pop up flash which I’ve experimented with extensively over the past 3-4wks.
I love my 6D, absolutely adore it.
But I think I’m going to take the K3/18-135 and work with it
P.S experimented with both M50 & R100 using native lenses
Tbh, I just find them both such hard work, the EVF is tiny and mediocre at best, the battery life is a massive shock coming from DSLR’s
Yes they are small and “cute” but the feedback and ergonomics suck big time.
You might want also some tele shots or UWA shots, since you can visit either places with architecture too close or places where you can look far away and shoot some particular details... I would take at least the 16-35, 24-70 and 70-300 triplet.
But if I had the only one lens to bring, it would be 24-105 STM (rather than 28-135 which is optically worse). And 24 compared to 28 is much wider, whereas 135 is not that much longer than 105.

Umm, and I live in Prague.
Ah, ok
I’ll take the 15mm along too, that equates to 22mm in FF speak. So 2 lenses offering a range of 22-203mm
Surely that will suffice. I’ll have my iPhone to hand ready for family grab shots.
Been experimenting again tonight using pop up flash bounced off the ceiling using a small credit card size piece of white card - the effects are nothing short of dramatic. Trying to devise away to clip it on/off when needed.
Due to fly in less than 12hrs
Just rechecked the weather forecast….
Raining almost every day!! 😔
Tbh, not sure I can be even arsed to take a camera, couldn’t give a monkey’s about the camera/lens getting wet…pfft
It’s the constant wiping of water droplets on the front lens… absolute PiTA!!
Tempted to leave the kit at home and just use phone - actually I’m tempted not to even go tbh!! My son has made it perfectly clear he isn’t remotely interested in going now - no fun sloping about in the rain!!
The forecast for home is sun all week!!
On a day when a basic weather forecast includes "rain" you may well still have some very nice weather!
- Quite often it may say "rain" for some particular day, but it might only actually rain for an hour or two. (We were recently in Portugal during a period like that and on quite a few days the rain was brief and overnight — and we had a lot of sun on those "rainy" days!)
- A bit of rain can actually make for some very interesting, moody, and otherwise worthwhile photographs.People carrying umbrellas seem to appeal, and the reflections from wet streets can be lovely.
Finally, I just checked Prague weather on the Apple weather app... and while it shows rain chances for the next, well, week and a half... the rain is not all-day-continuous.

I’m in Vienna and actually relieved there’s rain in the forecast. It’s been way too hot to go outside and next week, it will be possible again to explore. And the actual chance of rain on each day is still low. They often say it’s raining here, while it’s bone dry in my part of the city. Enjoy your trip.
The weather does not look so terrible to me. Surely there are some indoor activities the times when it is raining. I never got to Prague in my life and wish I had. Go!
I lived in a place where it started raining in November and didn’t stop until April. Suck it up, put on a rain jacket and walk the streets. From a photography perspective rain provides for much more dramatic images than a cloud free day. Don’t be a fare weather photographer.
Hey, hope you decided to take rain gear and go forward with your trip. Let us know how it goes/went!

The trip was incredible
Prague makes England look like a shithole!!
Arrived back late yesterday as flight was delayed
Today I wanted to view pictures..
Is anyone computer literate ??
I shot on two separate cards
One is just JPEG’s
The other were JPEG’s and RAW
Today I wanted to transfer all JPEG’s off both cards onto another card and then archive the two cards I used whilst away
So
I inserted card 1 into sd slot on computer (windows)then using a separate card reader inserted a blank sd card (formatted in camera first M50) copied over all the JPEG’s, then inserted card 2 and selected all JPEG’s and copied those too
The new card has 420 images
Yet when I insert that card into my camera it says no images??
Likewise when I open up the files on my laptop I can’t use the arrow keys to view the next shot? I have to close the browser and select the next picture

The camera won’t see images on a card unless they are in specific folders on the card (below DCIM) with specific names.
I rarely use Windows and have never used photo software on it, so I can’t be more specific about how to do this copy on Windows.
One tip: set the write lock switches on the original SD cards before you mix them up!
I would be storing the images long term on the drive in my computer, not a card.
We are currently going through all the cards over the last 18yrs
Sons 18th and we have over 10,000 shots to go at plus almost 4,000 of him playing football
Sorting through has been a nightmare but also brought back many forgotten memories
I’m not computer savvy in the slightest, I get stressed using them as I just don’t understand any of it. Probably explains why I’ve never shot raw previously, doubt I’ll do it again. I’ve reverted the camera back to just JPEG’s
I actually viewed a few JPEG’s snaps on the 65” tv - unbelievable!!
