So to take a X-E5 and make it a XE-Pro or X-Pro4 for me besides the hybrid view finder it would have to be:
1. A EVF or what ever viewfinder with at least 5.67 Million dots
2. A Rear LCD screen with at least 2.3 Million dots
3. A four way rear screen like an A7RV
4. 40-60 Mpixel sensor with DR of a full frame sensor
5. Weather Resistant build
So all the features of the a Leica 11 or Q with interchangeable lens mount
If it’s not APSC and not Fuji GFX sensor size then lenses become a real problem
The Sony A7CR is missing 1, 2, and 3. The A7RV has all of these except #2....Show more →
My preferences would be:
1. A rear screen that simply tilts up/down like the XT5. (In the context of the rangefinder aesthetic, keep it a bit on the simple side.)
2. It would be whatever sensor is in the rest of the line at that point — most likely still a 40MP sensor for the next generation.
3. Since part of the aesthetic is that of a small camera suitable for street, it makes more sense as an APS-C camera than as a miniMF camera. (In addition, there is not a significant line-up of GFX small GFX lenses that match the rangefinder aesthetic, nor is Fujifilm likely to make them. They already exist in their APS-C line.
“DR of a full frame sensor” is impossible in an APS-C camera since technical developments that would increase DR would also be available to full frame sensor-based cameras, where the larger sensor will always have greater DR. But this really is not an issue for a camera designed around the use case of the X-Pro line, especially these days when smaller sensors have plenty of DR — in fact, the “DR of a full frame sensor” of perhaps only one generation ago.
Overall, I think it should look like a cross between the X100(x) design and the XPro design, though it should be smaller since the optical portion of the hybrid viewfinder would be gone.
I wonder if it would be possible to speed up the stacked 26mp sensor to a level where it could record 2 images each time the shutter is pressed and merge them for a 1-stop DR improvement. The sensor in the X-H2S reads out at 1/90 so they‘d have to bring that to at least 1/125 or faster to avoid rolling shutter weirdness. Should be a separate mode though due to increased battery consumption and processing, maybe specifically marketed for low light similar to phones‘ „night modes“. This would basically bring it in line with full frame, and physically smaller sensors have an edge in readout speed given parity of tech.
But mostly I think the X-Pro line should move upmarket in terms of build quality and materials (maybe a brass top plate?). Aiming at the Leica segment but still at a much lower price.
