p.1 #1 · Another international trip with just my iPhone....

After Europe last year on just my iPhone 15 ProMax, I decided to step it up for Japan and take my Sony Rx10iv. Needless to day, it crapped out on me on the first day.

So, while it wasn't intentional, I am pretty happy with the results. I know it is not up to full-frame quality, but the freedom of *not* lugging gear, etc was (again) such a pleasure. It was a family-oriented trip, so don't need to hear, "you should have brought (insert gear)...." etc posts, but feel free to C&C at will.

Great images, and very nice gets on several of them, for example that Mt. Fuji with the Torii gate! Well done. The deer image is beautiful.

One of the great advantages of the iPhone is the immediacy of shooting--a finger tap to focus, a swipe to change fov, a lot of help from computational photography on the exposures, especially in very difficult lighting.

Is there any camera that comes anywhere close to that level of quick-shooting with all the advantages of sophisticated imaging software? I'd grab it if there were.

Great insight ~ very similar to my thoughts. The dear was in that position for a *very* short time and (mostly likely) would have moved in the time it would have taken me to set up with any traditional gear.

Great shots- and I'll never judge one to just use a phone due to convenience and/or intention of the trip, even though I got plenty of camera gear. I was in Las Vegas for a concert with friends last weekend. When I was there in January I knew I'd have time to roam and get some shots, so the A7cR & 14GM came with me. This trip it was gonna be random group shots walking around that'd end up nowhere but social media, so the camera stayed home and the results were fine. Completely get it.

Terrific shots! And it goes to show it’s the eye and not the gear.

Nicely done! Out of curiosity, how did the RX10 IV fail?

The deer photo and Mt Fuji are both very nice. Does the deer photo have simulated bokeh?

On family first trips I like to bring my Canon G7Xii, very similar to the Sony RX100 in size. My phone is just a se 2 or something like that. I find its photos disappointing. I’m hesitant to get better iPhone, it’s a bit addictive and I would prefer less phone interaction instead of more.

Camera functioned properly, but LCD (and viewfinder) blackout

Thanks!

Yes, the deer photo was on "portrait" mode and at a simulated f/1.4

I may pick up another high quality P&S for my next trip, but honestly so happy with what the iPhone has done on 2 international trips that I may very well stick with it.

Added benefit of automatically having pictures backed up to the cloud is quite convenient.

Haha, I did visit the 2 biggest (Bic and Yodobashi)... the latter was *way* better, but there wasn't really anything that caught my eye. I was contemplating a lens (50-150 f/2 - 2/8) for my wedding work, but don't want to lug that around all day.

Plus if I get a bad copy or need any service, buying there may present issues.

I value the warranty at 15% of product value. If its 20% cheaper or more then I would consider buying in Japan.

Good plan. The items I were looking at were pretty similar in cost (even with the strong dollar).

I am in Japan now and have looked at some items of interest and this has been my experience as well that the prices in Japan are not lower on average than the Canadian prices. I am particularly interested in the GFX100S II and this camera would cost me a little more if I buy it in Japan; thus, I decided to wait until I get back home in September. I would like to have a warranty that I can use at home as well in case something should go wrong with the expensive photography gear. There might be some items that cost less in Japan but my impression is that this is not true on average, and seeing higher prices should not be surprising. For another random example, the Sony 20-70mm F4 lens costs in Japan before taxes almost exactly what it would cost with the 13% tax included in Canada.

Yes, that was my experience as well. What camera store(s) did you visit? The best is Yodobashi. Bic is good too, but not nearly as nice / extensive

I am kind of in the middle of nowhere, on a work-related stay in Okinawa, and far away from the big stores; thus, I checked the prices on Yodobashi and Bic Camera websites. On the one hand, I wish I could spend 2-3 days in Tokyo (Nagoya or Osaka), to explore the new and also used photography gear in the big stores, but on the other hand I would even better like to spend the time in more remote places in Japan with good ryokans, onsens, and hiking in the mountains. Large Japanese cities are very tiring during the summer heat. They can be much fun for a day, maximum two, then I start feeling suffocated.
