Are you all suggesting Leica didn't build and staff the chemical processing facilities necessary to produce film just so they could bring us a brand new low ISO monochrome? So jaded. All of you. I scoff a righteous red-dot scoff in all your general directions.
I agree a rebranding seems likely, but I'm not so jaded as to think them partnering with a manufacturer to bring us an all new film that will probably underperform for the price is out of the realm of possibility.

When I read this, I just immediately thought, it's a marked up re-brand of something. Hope I am wrong. And here is a fun film for those seeking to user uber speed lenses in broad day light:
I have had a roll for a couple years, just haven't gotten around to shooting it...
I've shot that, as well as their ISO 8 Fantome Film. Both are Orwo films - it even says that on the rebate. Babylon is Orwo DN21. But they are actually a good value as if you buy the Orwo branded stuff, you need to buy a 100ft reel. So $9 is decent for a 36 exp roll.
Babylon is a nice classic pan film, while Fantome actually is an ortho film even though they do not advertise it as such. You can see this because the reds come as as deep blacks.
But I found both too speedy for my tastes. I mean if you are going to slow it down, slow it down. And so in those circumstances I shoot FPP Slow Your Roll iso 1.6 film:
These on Blue Ultra ISO 3
Oh and pics taken w Lomo Babylon ISO 13 (actually 12)
Lomo Fantome 8 (actual ISO 6) and the Lomo Minitar 32mm 2.8

All new film? Hmmmm...
Why spend hundreds of thousands (to likely never make most of that back) when you can partner with a manufacturer and repackage an existing film and gussy it up the Leica way? I mean Kodak didn't even make a new black and white stock for "Oppenheimer" when that came out (even though, they claimed they did).
There is 0.01% chance that this a new film. (Excuse me while I go hat shopping on that 0.01% chance that I'll need to be eating one).
All that being said, Leica showing a little bit of interest in their film camera business is a good thing.

Any guesses on why ISO 50? Leica mentions the ablity to use your Noctilux wide open in bright daylight but if you can afford a Noctilux, a ND filter is spare change. For a company that built it's reputation on available light photography, wouldn't a 400 or faster film made more sense?

They used to pack a roll of TriX with the limited edition titanium M-A.
This iso 50 Fomeica film is just a marketing gimmick - made special for Noctilux lenses! And a pretty good one too.

This forum is so funny-
Nothing but negativity and complaints before we even know what it is- Kudos to Leica for at least keeping things interesting in the film world and giving film shooters something to complain about

Listen, I suggest you share the collective ire for a certain brand, or we may turn on you!
We may seem civilized, but savagery lurks below...

Leica obviously won’t be doing the processing. They’ll just send it to a two bit operation like TheDarkroom. But because it will be done via a LeicaStore, and returned in a fancy box it will have appeal.
Because right now it is weird IMO that the store will sell you a film camera, but you are on your own buying film or getting it developed.

5222 XX looks suspiciously like Kodak's "Safety Film" - the first film they developed after the older stuff was bursting into flames.

Using a phrase like “… in your general directions” is a very slippery slope.

I can see the advertising campaign now: a cool-looking dude with a Noctilux mounted on his M-6, with the caption "I like slow films and fast lenses."
Noctigirl (Leica-centric YouTuber) will do it like this for sure......

This will be Fomapan 100 film rebranded as Leica 50 - as it actually is an ISO 50 film. It however is also one of the cheapest films out there which is perfect for Leica's mark up profit margin. What's the betting on how much a roll of Fomeica 50 will cost? I'm saying $25/roll 36 exp.
Right on the nail - ripe for Leica’s typical gouging.

The leak called out super panchromatic spectral response. ADOX HR-50 / Scala seems a good fit. This is naturally a very high contrast, slow copy film, but has been pre-exposed to flatten off the curve and shift the effective ISO up.

Maybe a few complaints and the normal amount of negativity. Leica could have provided more information in the press release, "Leica is teaming with (insert manufacture here) to bring our first branded film to customers. Leica stores around the word will be able to process your film. A presentation box containing custom darkroom prints from a selection of papers plus digital media and a roll of film will be included in the cost."

It's Leica, we should expect the best.
Thats the whole point-
Leica didn't announce a damn thing Its from a rumors site!
