question for everyone, I saw a video today, where they said
"they zoomed the lens to 100m, and locked it in @7.1, " and the lens stayed at 7.1 for everything out to 500m, is this something that people or doing, seems it would work for me, thanks

I used to do that on m 5D3 with EF 100-400 II. I was shooting manual and the camera couldn't automatically compensate as the aperture got smaller. It was the only practical way to maintain the same exposure while quickly zooming to follow action.
Now that I have a body (R6) that can automatically compensate as the aperture closes down, I set the aperture wide open at 100mm and let the ISO increase as I zoom.
This is for stills shooting. For video, I do set a variable aperture lens to the minimum at the long end (at least) like you saw in the video.

Why would you want to do that? Just set the camera to f7.1 if that's the aperture you want.
