I captured this fast-moving thunderstorm overtake a mountain pass area where I was hiking around at a couple evenings ago just as golden hour hit, painting the sky in surreal, fiery hues which continued until after sunset. Sometimes the storm doesn’t just bring rain—it brings drama, light, color, and moments that feel impossible. This was one of those evenings.

Wow very dramatic weather and light. Well captured. Was there lightning in the area? I've been caught on a mountain with incoming thunder and lightning and it's scary

Thank you Derrick, appreciate the kind words! Fortunately this time there was not lightning associated with this storm, even though we have been getting quite a few thunderstorms in the afternoon lately. I too have been caught up high a few times when fast moving thunderstorms rolled in and had to take cover. I agree it's a terrifying experience so I really try and avoid it now at all costs! I was relatively close to my vehicle if things had gotten scary.
Another one from the same evening and area that I finally got around to reviewing and working on. This was a little earlier as the storm was off in the distance more.

Wow, love displays like this. After the fact I always wish I had a timelapse set-up, but of course I want to keep shooting different compositions too! I really like the composition and light on the foreground in the last one, but I would crop off the out of focus area at the bottom.

Thanks for the great comment and suggestion Jim! You may be right about that out of focus area in foreground on the last one I posted. I was going for a sense of depth and originally thinking the out of focus area helped draw the eye in, but it does seem like an empty area that isn't needed. I was actually running a time lapse on my A7IV which is where the first couple shots came from while I was hiking around nearby with another camera looking for some other shots to photograph including these wildflower images. I appreciate the feedback, always great to hear it!

The colors are gorgeous! Really a great time to be out there, but then you still need to put work into it and also do some editing - which turned out excellent. Hope you were safe though while the storm was passing by.

Thanks so much Michael! The colors were incredible in person—glad the edit did it justice. And yep, kept a close eye on the storm… stayed safe!
