It appears I can like some posts and have that option but often not is there a setting I am missing?

Do you mean in a presentation board or elsewhere?

I believe that every forum posting has a like button, except for the first post of each thread in the presentation forums. I believe that this exception is meant to encourage discussion about that first post (versus simply hitting a like button).

I see a like button for the first post.

I often don't notice that I'm logged out, until I try to do something other than clicking into threads.

This isn�t a Presentation board. Look in any of those forums and you won�t see a Like on the first post.
