Far from any path and beyond the reach of drones, these hidden folds of Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland are best seen from above, where the glacier’s secrets begin to unfold. This marks the first of a possible two or more in this unfolding series.

These views are spectacular Rajan!
#1 is that a frozen river/ocean? Any idea what the angular pointer like area is about center left?
#2 powerful image
#3 stunning image with the book-matched pattern. Reminds me of a woodworking project I did with some beautiful grain!
#4 makes me a bit dizzy Love the depth and color and patterns and geometric forms
A world of amazing character you share, thank you
Karl
Oh my amigo! #2 is breathtaking! All are just mesmerizing! My type of country! I love cold. I love the vastness, the expanse of this Country!
Super photography amigo!

Karl: Thank you. I was expecting a quiz from you :-).
What you see further afield in #1 is the Vatnajökull glacier itself. The angular striated area you are referring to are dark bands on the glacier surface formed by volcanic ash which then get buried under compacted ice.

Thanks, Douglas. Yes, is was unbelievable - and very Icelandic in its unpredictability.

Rajan, splendid 👍🏻 Folds in Skaftafellsfjöll is so well framed. Not easy to shoot these scenes from helicopter. Good work as usual.
Fabulous work, Rajan. Love the color contrast of #1, #2 is a wonderful moment caught, and all the strong diagonal lines of #4 are so powerful they have me nearly feeling vertigo. Voted!

More fantastic Iceland images to get me psyched for my fall trip! Thanks for posting such large gorgeous versions.
Bradley, Ross, jm10_former, and Jim: Thank you, all.
Ross - My side of the helicopter is always without the door, so you can imagine how it feels when I have him bank to point down.
Jim - Good to see you psyched about your impending visit.
