p.1 #1 · Z8 - Shutter Cover Fails to Close

I've only noticed now that when I inadvertently fail to Turn OFF the camera (okay... just forget) when changing lenses on my Z8, the Sensor Shield fails to close automatically.... I do have it Enabled in the Menu..... and it does close when Power is OFF....

I assumed that it would sense if a Lens was being removed and auto close it.... and not be dependent only on one remembering to turn the camera off first...

Is this normal?

Your assumption is misguided. It only works on power off. You do realize that electricity going through your sensor generates static electricity that pulls dust towards it right? Turn off the camera!

Thank you for the clarification... though an "auto close sense" ability on lens removal ( when the camera is left on ) does not seem to be an impractical request to me.... One more Option in the Set Up menu maybe....

I have had my problems with dust on the sensor. I always shut off my Z8 before removing a lens.
My problem has been with occasional specs of dust on the sensor. The specs became an annoyance with stills and much more troublesome on a video.

I learned my lesson that it was not good enough to clean the sensor only occasionally, whenever it occurred to me. I began training myself to clean it every time I turned the Z8 on. Then I moved to cleaning it automatically, when the Z8 is turned on.

Thanks for the suggestion of auto-cleaning upon power on.... I had not turned it on. I should say I know its always best to have the camera OFF when changing lenses.... it's just been in the heat of battle when I shoot sports that I have neglected that very important step... infrequently at times.

Cheers!

Not sure how an “auto-detect” would work, since not all lenses have CPUs? Like all of manual focus AI/AIS lenses.

In any case, best practice since the time cameras and lenses had AF (so even before the digital era) is to switch off the camera before changing lenses, out of paranoia that static could fry the lens’ and/or camera’s electronics. Not sure there was ever a documented case of that happening, though. Is Mythbusters still around?

I would think that the camera could sense when the lens mount was unlatched and the sensor cover could automatically engage.

I suggest cleaning the camera around the Mount area, and the back part of the lens before removing it. We did that for years and even in a busy studio, where we are changing lenses all the time, we could go years without cleaning a sensor.
And of course set it to have the shutter close when you turn the camera off, before lens removal.

You want the cover to come down and shake the sensor clean on power down. That takes a few seconds so might be too late. n Generally it is good practice not to remove lenses with the power on.

That would likely require adding a sensor to what is currently just a mechanical mount/lock. There are probably cheaper solutions that are just as effective to implement…like turning off the camera before changing lenses. 😀

? not impractical? I mean how many people in the world would want such a function?

Just turn the camera off when changing lens. How difficult can that be? you are supposed to do it anyway as it is obviously not recommended to expose the sensor when it is powered up.

nikon will not want to encourage people to expose the sensor when the camera is power on.
