p.1 #1 · Dogwood over Merced

Rummaging through some past photos and came to one of my favorites from a 1 on 1 workshop with William Neill. It was a wonderful 3 days with an incredible photographer and really nice guy. Great memories of this workshop which was gifted to me.
William Neill has shot this several times before and since my time with him. When we were shooting together, I was standing just to his right which allowed me to catch the golden sun reflection which did not appear in his. Since that time, he has several shots where he was able to capture a similar scene. Of course, conditions have to be perfect with no wind to isolate the dogwood while the stream rushes behind. This image was achieved in a single shot.

[Edited image per Karl Witt's suggestion]

Hi Bob, what marvelous light, like a metallic wash on those rocks with cascading water to give a sweet effect to it! I am surprised that the rushing water was not moving the branch.
The green against the gold and the fusion of the big is excellent, gives a richness to the greens. One question, just perhaps me overthinking, is it possible to get a more true white to the flowering dogwood petals or were they tinted green, might give more pop to it??

The rushing water alone with that light would make a wonderful image too! Great vision, congrats on this shot.

Thank you Karl! The dogwood blooms did have this tint of green to them. Whether this is a reflection of the leaves or the leaves themselves, I don't quite remember. At the time, I played around several times trying to get the blooms whiter but (with my editing skills at the time) only served to make the green leaves appear off in color. Perhaps I should try again but I was content to simply leave it as it was seen.

Clearly, I was blessed with perfectly still conditions. While the branches did move once in a while, they also remained still at times so it came down to patience and timing.

[I went ahead and edited the image per your suggestion. It's a lot easier (for me) using modern Lightroom masking to effect the change.]

For me there is enough of a boost to give them life in the edit, just a build up of better separation. They look nice and natural

I love everything about this image! I've tried similar scenes but there always seems to be a breeze flowing from the creek and moving things. You did well here!!

Thanks so much Al. It took a few tries to time stillness in the branches but the conditions could not have been better.

Beautiful shot Bob and a great reminder that time is coming up again in Yosemite. I've tried to photograph these once and came away with nothing as impressive as this.

This is beautiful. Images like this are harder to make effectively than it seems like they would be. You've done very well with it.

Unique and creative photography Bob!
The dogwood is probably one of my top 5 flowering trees! You caught it perfectly!

This is a super composition!!!

Thanks Dan! It's much easier to focus only on the blooms with today's tools versus when this image was taken. At least for me . . .
