p.2 #1 · Suggestions for carrying a 400-800 + one body?

Tony, I do have a TT Glass Limo. If you put the hood in the storage position, the lens and a body will fit with some room to spare. But if you put the hood in the shooting position though, the fit is very, very tight. It can be done but the bag stretches out all the way. You know the hood for the GM 300mm is basically the same but shorter than that of the G 400-800mm. Now, you can put the hood for the GM 300mm in the shooting position and the zoom lens + camera will fit

My lens arrived yesterday, and I might be able to fit it with the hood in shooting orientation, but there is a really nice foam padded “frame” in the bottom of the pack - it holds the end of the lens in place and protects it. The hood in shooting orientation does not fit within that frame - I’d have to remove the “frame”. But with the hood reversed, it fits beautifully - that makes it easy - I’ll carry it hood reversed (gives some room at the top, too). I am using the suppled yoke as well - fits very nicely around the switches section of the lens. I am happy with the way it all works. I’ve used the long divider vertically just a little way off the side to provide a slot to stash the Peak Design Slide strap, too.

All up, I think this will do the trick - it gets its first tryout this weekend.

BTW: the hood is more robust than I expected - it feels thicker than the hood for the 300 GM, and more substantial than the 200-600 hood. I know it’s not a critical part, but I like it.

Interesting, I think this is the first Sony G or GM lens I’ve bought that has come without a pouch or bag - not that I used the bag that came with the 200-600, or any of the GM lenses (the 300mm GM’s conical bag is cute, but I don’t use it). Honestly, I doubt anyone would use the bag Sony supplied for a lens like this, so it makes sense not to supply one.

I am using a Wimberley P-40 plate on the foot. The foot is a little short, but the plate is long enough to make it easy to balance.

Last thing - beware! The cardboard of the box the lens come in is razor sharp - I cut my finger unpacking the lens. It’s well protected by the box, but wow, those edges are sharp! Try not to get blood on the box, or the lens :-D

If you are looking for something different, I have been using this with the insert for years. I previously carried my a9 with 200-600 +1.4x attached. Plenty of pockets for accessories like additional straps, batteries, memory cards, cleaning kit, etc, etc. Just received my 400-800 today and paired with my a1 it fits perfectly with the lens hood on reverse.

I got my 400-800 on my Wednesday, and was struggling with the bag selection because I don't need a full pack, just a carrier. Then I saw Tenba Solstice 12L mentioned in the opening post. Got it today: it's so tiny, yet the 400-800 with the A1 fits perfectly! It even fits with the 1.4x mounted but it gets a bit awkward.
