p.2 #8 · What Zeiss lenses have the most Zeiss "magic"? | |
Steve Spencer wrote:
I think there are several things that characterize different Zeiss lenses
First, I think it is generally high level contrast and specifically microcontrast. Lenses that I have owned and that I think fit this characterization include:
Milvus 18 f/2.8, C/Y 21 f/2.8, Loxia 21 f/2.8 ZE/ZF 25 f/2, Loxia 25 f/2.8, Otus 28 f/1.4, ZM 35 f/1.4, Milvus 35 f/1.4, Contax 645 35 f/3.5, ZE/ZF/Milvus 50 f/2 Macro, Otus 55 f/1.4, Loxia 85 f/2.4, ZM 85 f/4, ZE/ZF/Mivus 100 f/2 Macro, C/Y 100 f/3.5, ZE/ZF/Milvus 135 f/2 APO, Sony/Zeiss 135 f/1.8
Second, I think some Zeiss lenses have been highly corrected for CA and have had really nice bokeh. Lenses that I have owned that fit this characterization include:
Otus 28 f/1.4, Otus 55 f/1.4, Contax 645 120 f/4 APO Macro, ZE/ZF Milvus 135 f/2 APO, Hasselblad C 250 f/5.6 Superachromat
Third I think some Zeiss lenses have been noteworthy for there close focus performance especially at wide apertures. Lenese that I have owned that fit this characterization include:
ZE/ZF 25 f/2, Hasselblad 40 f/4 IF CFE, ZE/ZF/Milvus 50 f/2 Macro, ZE/ZF/MIlvus 100 f/2 Macro, Contax 645 120 f/4 APO Macro, ZE/ZF/Milvus 135 f/2 APO
Fourth, I think some Zeiss lenses have a dual character with softer images wide open with a fair bit of spherical aberrations that clear as the lens is stopped down and then they become very sharp at narrower apertures. Lenses I have owned with that fit this characterization include:
ZE/ZE 35 f/1.4, Contax 645 55 f/3.5,, Contax 645 80 f/2, Milvus 85 f/1.4
My personal favorites are:
ZE/ZF 25 f/2
Otus 28 f/1.4
Contax 645 55 f/3.5
Otus 55 f/1.4
Loxia 85 f/2.4
ZE/ZF/Milvus 100 f/2 Macro
Contax 645 120 f/4 APO Macro
ZE/ZF/Milvus 135 f/2 APO
Sony/Zeiss 135 f/1.8
Hasselblad C 250 f/5.6 Superachromat
