p.1 #1 · Help me pick a 28mm M mount lens for my CLE
Howdy y'all,
I posted this on the Leica board here on FM, but figured the film shooters here might also be a great source of wisdom.
My head is spinning with 28mm options, and most of what I can find on the inter-webs is based on shooting digital. Any film shooters on here have any wisdom they can drop on me, please and thanks.
Here is where my heads at thus far.
Options 1) Leica Elmarit. Probably the largest? size and weight wise out of the 3(+) lenses. People seem to love their rendering, and I keep reading about "a glow" they produce. I've never owned anything Leica, so it would be a first.
Option 2) Zeiss Biogon - I own a Batis, and had a Loxia for my Sony, and I've always liked their colors / rendering. I've never had a Zeiss lens on a film camera tho, so would be another first. Size wise this one might be the second largest?
Option 3) Voigtlander Ultron, Color Skopar, Nokton, etc - When I scored the CLE in Japan, and I needed a lens, I picked up a v1 Ultron. Shot half a roll (traded it in on a 40mm Rokkor), and was stoked on how the snaps came out. Additionally my 40mm f/2 Ultron is probably my favorite F mount lens. Only complaint (and it's minor), was the v1 Ultron was pretty long on my CLE.
The big thing with the CV's is... There are so many damn options lol. The Ultron v2 appears to be smaller than the v1, but the Color Skopar is even smaller than that. Then there's the Nokton, which is the biggest? of the CV's I've mentioned, but the extra light is always appreciated with film IMO.
Would beyond appreciate any input y'all would be willing to share.

I have owned several M mount 28’s over the years. A couple of V1 Elmarit ASPH, Ultrons, Color Skopars and now I have a Biogon. The V1 Elmarit ASPH has a lot going for it. It’s small, very sharp and renders well with both B&W and color. Its size would work well with the CLE. The current crop of 28 Colors Skopars are also a good choice for size. There are several to choose from and there are plenty of reviews. Both the pre ASPH Elmarit and the Biogon are about the same size and even though they’re fine lenses, may be a bit large on the CLE. The Ultron offers an extra stop to 2.0 and there have been good reviews of the 1.5 Heliar. There’s plenty to choose from. Look through the posted images and check out the reviews. Good luck and have fun choosing one.

I loved the new Voigtlander 28/2.8 Color Skopar. Great color, modestly corrected (Aspherical) so plenty sharp, focus tab, metal Skopar style hood, and weighed nothing.

I use that one too. Prefer it to the BS 28. Super lens.

With film, you're always looking for speed. I'd highly recommend one of the 28/1.4-1.5.
Of that lot, the CV 28/1.5 nokton is smallest and the rendering and good sharpness would be great on film.

He is using a Minolta CLE. Have you ever held one? They are tiny. A big lens would ruin the handling plus it may block the rf window so you cannot focus! That happened on my CLE when I put lenses like the Nokton 50 1.1 on it, 7A 50 1.1 etc.

Yes, dad had a CL. The CL/CLE were born to shoot a M-Rokkor 40/28 combo. It's probably best to just find a M-Rokkor 40 and the M-Rokkor 28/2 and use them for what they are.
I assumed that wasn't the direction here, One alternative is to put modern glass on it to make it really shine. There is someone else on this forum shooting a 28/1.5 M-camera on film and the results are stunning. The 50/1.1 IS a big lens. The 28/1.5 is a lot smaller.

I would love to be able to find a 28mm Rokkor without the dreaded white spots.
I'm actually looking into the Konica M Hexanon lenses as an options too

When I had a couple of CLEs, my main 40 was the CV 40 1.4 - tiny and fast and great on film. And the 28s I used were either the Leica Elmarit Asph 28 2.8 or the CV 28 3.5.

I'd recommend the CV 28mm f1.5, great lens and compact. I think I am using this lens over any other wide (21-35mm) lenses due to its size and f1.5 wide open. With the winter season being dark by 6pm it's handy to bring with me on my commute back home.
