p.1 #1 · Tsankawi Ruins - New Mexico

So my wife and I took a trip to New Mexico last week and I managed to get one day of shooting. It was crazy windy, but we decided to hike around the Tsinkawi ruins. What a fascinating and beautiful place. The ruins were amazing and the way that the footpaths have been worn, feet deep, into the rock by all of the centuries of foot traffic is surreal. I should have shot some abstracts of the foot paths, in retrospect, but I did manage a few keepers.

#1: My favorite of the day:

#2: Another shot of the same tree. I like this one too, but I think I prefer the B&W (the composition and the B&W conversion), although I like the emphasis on the long shadows and the dividing line made by the yellow grass in this color one too:

#3: Some great texture in one of the rocks

#4: The first shot of the day. I like this one, but I might end up cropping out the top portion a bit.

As always, CC are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

neat set of pictures. i agree that the black and white version of #1 is better than the color version. good job with all of them. must have been a fascinating place to visit. thanks for sharing your pictures.

Thanks for the feedback, both of you. It was definitely a fascinating place. It's funny that I don't have any final images of the ruins themselves. They're absolutely fascinating but challenging to photograph. I'll have to figure out a better way to shoot them. Also, the ruins are so old and the rock in the area is soft enough that all of the footpaths between the ruins along the cliffs have been worn down several feet from hundreds of years of foot traffic, resulting in these deep, narrow troughs running all over. I'm kicking myself that I didn't do some abstract shots of those. All for next time then.

Thanks,

Dave

All great images. Used to go to Tsankawi alot back in the day, and one time almost stepped on a 5-foot rattlesnake. Seems like it is less photographed than the main part of Bandelier.

Nice work, I too prefer the B&W on #1. I also really like the last one and agree that a bit of crop (1/4th off top) might help,

Thanks! I had been to Bandelier before, but never Tsankawi. It is a little isolated. Thankfully one of our drivers heading in to town for dinner one night told us about it. It's a great spot.

Thanks. I appreciate the input on the cropping as well.
