Damn. After recently adding the 35 SR to pair with the APO I was looking at either the 1.2 reissue or f/1 Noctilux to pair with the 50 Lux asph. And now, this release. I’m still leaning toward the f/1, but would enjoy the thoughts of others.
If you are a sucker for small Leica glass, then pucker up for the F/1 Noct. It’s a pretty amazing optic but its not fun to carry and use-
Lots of people love it but handling isn’t on the top of anyone’s list with it. The 1.2’s handling is much better but that hood!!!!
The 50 1.4 Lux really is the right mix of size, IQ, character etc. You may find differently but I stopped going down the 50 Noct route and I am content with the 50 Lux ASPH-

Thanks for this. IIRC I believe you had the 1.2 at some point? I thought I recall seeing some images.
Edit: it was over in the Leica forum. You were a fan of the 1.2 then, but it appears you fell out of love with it due to your above stated reasons.

The 50 1.2 is my favorite Leica 50- Its just a little Clunky to use. Also the hood is just criminal!!
I think it is going to hurt this 50 Re-release as well. The 50 1.2 is soft wide open but really pretty- Its the best Noctilux from a form factor perspective IMO.

This is going to sell very well at this price point!!!!!!!! 100% not the same rendering as the original but very intresting addition to Leica's moder offering.
I like the 12 blade aperture and the updated coatings. I also love they didn't cripple this lens with a 1m mfd- (looking at you Steel rim)
I clicked on the link and was like $4k, interesting. Ugh. But for Leica it is a.... bargain

I tried this in store the other day. The long focus throw makes it a no-go for me.
I spent yesterday with two cameras comparing a v3 against the new lens; switching between them was like operating the clutch on Landrover defender vs. a sports car.
The new lens focus was smooth, heavy and slow; relatively, the v3 was light, fast and required a delicate touch.

The V3 is to fast for my taste-
I love the rendering, didn't love the short and fast focus through. Funny enough, others enjoy that part of the lens

If you don’t like the 100-degree focus throw on the 50/1.4 Summilux V3, you probably won’t enjoy the focus throw on most of Leica’s latest lenses, which are usually 90 degrees. For example, the 50/1.4 Summilux ASPH. (V1) has a shorter 90-degree throw while maintaining the same minimal focus distance of 0.7m.

Fred-
Cmon now man- I 100% know you notice a difference between using the 50 Lux V3 and the 50 Lux ASPH-I sure as heck did and you now own the lens I am comparing it to
Its not just about how long/short- The v3 is very very fast.

I didn't mean to offend you, and I'm not sure which lenses you've tried or are currently using. What I shared was just a fact about the focus throw between these two lenses.
I totally agree that the length of the throw is important, but how fast or slow it feels really depends on the individual lens. For example, a lens might have a softer helicoid lube, which could make the focus ring rotate more quickly, while another might have a firmer lube or could be CLAed with a firmer one, making it feel slower.
So, we're looking at both ring rotation speed and length. In my comment, I was specifically referring to the length or throw angle.
Yes, to clarify, I'm very accustomed to my 50mm summicron v5 which I believe has a 90 degree focus throw, so that's probably why I was initially turned off from the long focus throw. Maybe if I spent longer time on it than just a 5 minute demo at the store I could change my mind, but for now I'd rather go for the 50 Lux ASPH since the focus throw is similar.

Would you, guys, think it would make sense buying this lens, while already owning the Lux ASPH, and the C-Sonnar?
In my opinion, it's too close to the 50 LUX asph.
If you have the disposable income and want it, it's a beautiful lens with a very nice look and feel. Image-wise, it's just not different enough to own both.
I would go true vintage 50 LUX pre-asph V3 if you wanted something different.

Until recently I had 3 50mm M lenses. The Summicron v5 for small size, the Lux ASPH for classic Leica handling and optics, the Thypoch Simera f/1.4 for 14 aperture blades and round bokeh balls and cinematic rendering. Each had its purpose.
About 2 Months ago while in Bologna, Italy the Leica store there made me an attractive offer so I traded for this new 50mm Summilux ASP FLE Close Focus. It is just about the perfect 50mm. Optically excellent, fantastic wide open rendering while superbly sharp to the edges stopped down, much improved rounded bokeh, classic Leica build and handling. I like it so much that since getting it I haven't used the Cron and recently sold it. I am thinking of selling the Simera too because the 12 blades of this lens render so much nicer than the old Lux that I can use it when I used to use the Simera.
So, yes, it makes sense to have three 50mm M mount lenses for different uses. But this lens is so darn good at so many things that for me it became a replacement for all three, not an addition. It is the best all around 50mm M lens available and I find it to be better that the 50mm ASPH in important ways worth the upgrade. But like Rusty says, too close in use cases to own both. This and a super character rich vintage lens makes more sense. If I sell that Simera that is the direction I will go.
Agreed with Rus. I have the lux ASPH BC, and from all my research and reading reviews, the summilux reissue's rendering is very close to ASPH wide open, so in the end I actually opted for Pre ASPH V3 to add to my Lux ASPH.
