Most of the traffic on fredmiranda.com comes from mobile devices or larger monitors, so the height of the new header was designed with those viewers in mind. If we make it too short, the logo would appear very small on larger monitors, which is a concern since the majority of our members are photographers using those displays. The mobile version of the site uses a different header, so that doesnt apply here, but its still a significant portion of how members experience the site. Reducing the header height by half would make the logo too small, which isnt the goal. I believe the current design strikes a good balance, but Im open to making small adjustments if needed!...Show more →
Does the data show the enlargement/zoom the user has set globally on their browser? Even when (especially when) I'm on my high res 27" monitor for work, I need to have a global zoom set in the web browser so that everything isn't too small, especially text. Doing that mimics using a lower resolution by two steps. Other factors crowding vertical space include the shortcut bar and tabs if the user has them.
Honestly the size of the header only bothers me because it's persistent/frozen at the top when it doesn't really need to be. If it scrolled with the page, all would be well.

Every site layout involves some trade-offs. Keeping the header at the top does take up a bit of space, but it also makes navigation easier for FM members since all the site links are always accessible and consistent across pages. Like I mentioned, it might take some time to get used to the new setup, and I really appreciate your feedback. If there's a way to improve it, you know I'll do my best!

I understand but even a slight reduction in height would help, IMO (me: running away now after being too insistent )
(edit: Discovered I can use Safari's hide items feature normally used for advertisements to hide the header completely issue solved for me.)
Fred, I knew something was up when the old top icons disappeared, and then various other changes gradually appeared.
My first instinct was to not like it, but after I got past my comfort with the old layout I came to think that the new one is actually cleaner and more efficient.
One question/suggestion: Since the question comes up regularly, I think it would be useful at some point to share a policy regarding the dimensions of posted photos.

How can I do this? I could use more real estate on my MacBook Air.
Thanks
...then just select the item on the page you want to remove. Works with ads, too, though you have to do it on every page, and sometimes the ads are not recognized as the same item from before, so you have to do it again.

I think the main issue with the header is it's twice as tall as it functionally needs to be if you remove the logo from the conversation, and it doesn't appeared scaled correctly on a high res (5K in my case) monitor.
I personally find the light transparency of it distracting as well, but that's likely very subjective by user.

You may have noticed some recent updates to the site! The most noticeable change is the new site header. This update was necessary to modernize the platform, improve compatibility with major search engines, and keep FM aligned with today's web standards.
We made sure to preserve the site's familiar look and feel while enhancing functionality. The entire codebase was also updated for better compatibility and security.
Another change you might not have noticed is the addition of a dedicated page for FM Gear Reviews. Previously, reviews were spread across forum threads and had to be found through searches. Now, they are all organized on a single page for easier access. You can also search by focal length, lens manufacturer, and other criteria to find reviews faster.
I've shared the link to the new page below. You can always find it under the updated site header in 'What's New' and 'FM Gear Review,' as well as in the forum footer at the bottom of the page.
Hi Fred, it looks like My Notifications showing near top is now gone? Is there a way to get it back? I personally loved that feature, seeing notification of new PMs, quotes, likes right away each time I come to FM.
EDIT: I see you answered this when Douglas asked previously.

The change to how it shrinks as you scroll is great...even better if it was just that size instead of changing.
Now that there is code for both sizes, possible to just have a toggle in user preferences?
I have made adjustments to how the header height changes with scrolling. This should greatly improve the experience for those with smaller resolution screens.

Thanks for your feedback!
Looks great! The way it shrinks or expands when scrolling was the perfect compromise.

I personally still prefer to have the feedback icon directly available, without having to dig up the for sale thread to see if a feedback was left.
Hi Douglas,
Could you clarify this for me? The feedback "ticker" on members profiles when browsing the Buy and Sell boards has been this way since the beginning, many years ago. It never appear on the profiles when browsing other boards. Unless you are referring to something else, please let me know.

Fred, I could be wrong in my description. The way it is now, I have to open the B&S page, find my post, click the feedback status box under my name to see what feedback was left. I don't recall having to go through these step before.. If my for sale post was made, say 3 weeks ago, it may not be that easy to locate the post. I sort of remember before this new update I could see my feedback just by clicking my profile on the top of the page? But I am at the age that I may not remember how things were few day ago, so I could be wrong

Got it. Try clicking on your profile avatar. It should take you to your profile and display the feedback ticker. Let me know if that works!
