p.1 #1 · Voigtlander COLOR-SKOPAR 35mm F3.5 Aspherical

web transcription of the Japanese audio:

Hello, his time, we will be introducing the Color Scopar 35mm 3.5 VM interchangeable lens for the Leica Rangefinder. The Color skopar 35 3.5 VM is a product with a newly designed optical mount. The exterior is the same as that of the Color skopar 28mm 2.8, which is already on the market, but with a reduced aperture. We used the same design as the aspherical., and planned it as a product that is compact and has high descriptive power while having a nostalgic appearance. Making it compact has the advantage of increasing mobility and portability, and when attached to a rangefinder body, the lens does not intrude into the frame of the viewfinder. My and the Render Color skopar are 35 3.5 A. The fact that the lens does not intrude into the frame also makes it possible to take photos with accurate composition without stress. The Color skopar 35mm 3. 5 Aspherical AVM mount uses a luxurious optical design that uses one double-sided aspherical lens and three anomalous partial dispersion glasses, despite having a simple lens structure of 4 groups and 6 lenses.

This gives you a compact camera with high descriptive power, and I think you can also feel the good bokeh from the small number of elements. Despite its compactness, the minimum focusing distance is the same as that of a standard rangefinder body, at 0.7m. Color Super 35 35US Helical VM Mount The product exterior is very compact, with a total length of 14mm from the mount to the tip of the lens, and the lens extension method uses a rotating focus system to create a slender exterior style. The product is available in silver and black paint, and despite the use of brass for the exterior parts, it is extremely lightweight, weighing just 99g. The Color skopar already on the market is 28mm 2.8, 40mm 2.8, and 40mm 2.8 Aspherical, but it has a structure that takes into account external factors such as dust, etc., due to a design that does not expose the helicoid from the gap between the mount and focus ring when the focus is extended.

The focus section is equipped with an infinite lock mechanism, which is useful for adjusting the aperture ring and attaching and detaching the lens. The filter diameter is 34mm, and the Color skopar 35mm and 3.5 come with a thin, dedicated protective filter that matches the color of the lens. The protrusion of the lens tip is only about 1mm, so even when a filter is attached, it will not affect the external design. In addition, a dedicated lens hood is also included to match the color of the lens. The hood is attached to the tip of the lens and secured in place by tightening the screw on the side of the hood. This hood can be used with or without the dedicated filter. Please note that the hood cannot be used if a commercially available filter is attached. The lens cap is a screw-on cap that has been cut to match the color of the lens, and the hood cap is a screw-on cap that has been deeply cut. The aperture can be adjusted by turning the ring on the tip of the lens where the filter is attached.

When the hood is attached, you can control the aperture by turning the hood. The hood has an aperture index, so please be careful to attach the hood so that it matches the aperture index on the lens. Focus is controlled using the focus lever, but once you get used to it, you will be able to tell the approximate distance by the position of the focus lever, so please try it. Also, since the entire lens rotates when focusing, we recommend that you control the aperture first. Finally, there is one more thing to note. The mount of the black painted model is finished in black. Therefore, if you use a camera, lens or adapter that has a system for reading lenses attached with a 6-bit code, the camera will not recognize that two lenses are attached, so please set the lens detection to off in the camera body settings.

Very cool! Here’s what I’ve gathered so far about this lens:

1) Optical design consists of 6 elements in 4 groups, featuring 1 double-sided aspherical element and 3 ADP elements.
2) Extremely compact with a height of only 14mm.
3) Weighs just 99 grams, despite being made of brass (available in chrome or painted black).
4) Includes a 1mm-thick UV filter, similar to what EINS filters offer.
5) Comes with a vintage-style hood that attaches to the outer barrel by tightening a screw. The hood also allows aperture adjustment by rotating it -- very cool!
6) The 1mm UV filter, hood, and provided metal cap can all be used simultaneously.
7) The design is reminiscent of the existing Voigtländer 28mm f/2.8 Color-Skopar and 40mm f/2.8 Heliar lenses.
8) Features an infinity lock and a minimum focusing distance of 0.7m.

Looking forward to seeing how it performs!

Interesting you found this video on their youtube page because it's not even mentioned in their news yet:
https://www.cosina.co.jp/news/

I'm wondering if they prematurely posted it by mistake...

Yes, I think they must have published the video 12 hours too early by mistake. Normally they make their new lens announcements on 15th of each month at 3pm JST, and when 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, they do it on previous working day that's closest to 15th. This month that would be today, 14th.

They typically post their YouTube product introduction video just a couple of minutes before 3pm JST and then publish the news announcement and lens specific product pages exactly at 3pm. Also, all the Japanese camera stores that sell CV lenses make the new lens available for pre-orders right after the announcement.

This time there's only the YouTube video (published on 14th at 3am instead of 3pm) and nothing else, so seemingly they put it out 12h too early, but official announcement will most likely come today (14th) at 3pm.

Also, I was mostly expecting them to announce a Canon RF version of 28/1.5 but it seems they had totally different plans. Makes me wonder if they are not going to make that lens in RF mount...

This looks like a very interesting lens but I'd prefer a build like 28/2.8 Type II.

EDIT: Looks like they have now unpublished the video for the time being. It'll probably come back live in a few hours.

Oof 105k yen is not that good in terms of value for the lens spec. I doubt it outperforms the 35/1.5 at f/3.5. Compactness might be worth it for some.

Yes, it's considerably more expensive when compared to official prices of similarly styled CV 28/2.8 (around 80K yen) and 40/2.8 (around 70K yen).

That looks like a fun lens. I have a Summaron 3.5 cm f3.5 but it has just a 1 meter MFD. I'll just say it is nice having a really small lens for some occasions so if I didn't already have a Summaron I would consider this for sure.

True, but this one is brass for both silver and black and includes more accessories. It comes with a 1mm thick UV filter, a dedicated vintage-style hood instead of a simple screw-in and this hood is integrated with the aperture control ring. Also, it features a double aspherical element in its design. All of this adds to the cost, but whether it’s worth the price is for potential buyers to decide.

It looks to be another nice lens but since I already have the 28 and 40 f2.8's, I really don't need this 35. Of course I really don't need any more lenses but...

Same here, but the CV 35/3.5 Color-Skopar has some unique advantages. For one, it's much shorter than the others at just 14mm. The CV 40/2.8 Heliar, for instance, is super compact but still measures 21mm in length. It also weighs about 30% more than the new 35mm.

I wonder if Cosina will sell the 34mm UV filters separately for their other lenses!

Here's the optical design of the new 35/3.5 Color-Skopar:

At least for my uses, I think I’ll stick with the VM 40/2.8. I prefer the faster aperture and find it already very compact!

Ugh Fred! I don't need your logic! I am trying to resist here. My 28 and 40 are in black, maybe I need a silver 🤷‍♂️😂

This lens extends quite a bit into the mount. It’s only 14mm long, but it seems to protrude just as much inside!

By the way, I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but the aperture rotates counterclockwise, unlike other Cosina VM or Leica lenses.

I should get a copy next week.

Looking forward to your impressions & findings! I wonder if the lens will be more problematic than usual when adapted to Sony native stack cameras since the back element is going to be particularly close to the sensor. I hope you can also test that out when you get the lens.

I'm eagerly waiting to see what Cosina will announce just prior to CP+. I think this lens will also be avaliable there for hands on trials along with some other new lenses that they haven't announced yet.

Yes, I'll definitely test it on the Sony as well. Lenses at f/3.5 or slower typically aren't affected much by sensor stack thickness, but we'll make sure it's the case.
