This 35 f/1.2 and the 85 f/1.2 is a wedding photographers dream. And it for sure is my dream to have them in my bag
In the right hands looking for what’s best this pair will deliver best in class results and make clients very happy.
But I can understand those preferring to prioritize their comfort while shooting or who think that lesser lenses are good enough.
Personally I fully agree. I’d rather do a wedding with a Z8 and Z6III with a 20mm f1.8 S, 35mm f1.2 S, 85mm f1.2 and 135mm f1.8 S over anything else available out there. Even if I understand fully that it’s a lot Les tiring to just adapt the Sony 28-70mm f2.0 or use the Tamron 35-150mm (I own one too). I have covered events with both approaches and am much happier with the results with primes but also much more tired at the end of the day.

This is the crux of it right here. In a world where content is mainly consumed on phone screens, good enough is the new gold standard. So as long as a lens produces good test charts and manufacturers have their influencer army well briefed; happy days.

Indeed yes. But then at some point some photographers start to think about what matters to them as creators. Beyond the economic rationale, why they are doing it, why they define themselves as photographers, how they want to have an impact and then good enough starts to become extremely boring.
Those are the folks who will understand this lens and what Nikon is trying to achieve with the Z mount. There is an overlap with Leica but with a higher focus on working folks who want both the look while benefiting from a pro tool delivering reliably whatever happens. It’s pretty unique.

I started getting back into photography to get my face out of my phone, to see the world thru a real lens. Yes, the phone is the way most people view our photos, but we have control over what we create. And I want the best for the art I make. I love these 1.2 lenses and what I can do with them. Cannot wait for this 35.

This video dropped today, IMO the best hands on video featuring the 35 1.2S (use subtitles/auto translate option):
That is a great video, I love the etiquette and decorum of Japanese people. Although I thought she might lose her's when he said he would buy the lens.

Went to my shop to see if the lens came in, and it had! Not allowed to purchase it until tomorrow but we did throw it on a ZF at the store to mess around with. Found the rendering to be really sharp, but also very pleasant. The bokeh looks really smooth wide open. Get excited. This lens is sweet!
Also it didn't feel as big as the 50 1.2 or 85 1.2, but I didn't have it next to those lenses.
"Nikon has completed the trinity of enormous extra bright lenses". It looks like a great lens-
Now that the enormous trinity is complete, hopefully Nikon can stop making monsters and buck the trend. Put out a compact S line at f/2. You know, something most people would buy in droves and find much more useful for everyday life.

The f/1.8 S-line series is excellent and reasonably compact considering that the exterior is the same diameter for each lens (from 20 to 85 mm) so that the lens can be swapped in a focus pulling setup without having to make adjustments. Lenses can be made even more compact but then each lens would have a different size. Since video is now the driving force for sales, this is what Nikon decided to do. Probably the next line Nikon will make is a cinema line of primes which will likely be several times larger than the photo priority hybrid primes. They do have some compact primes as well.

I shot my first event with it last weekend. From the get go I loved the 85mm 1.2. The 35mm hasn't wowed me yet, but maybe that's just my inability to make it shine. Admittedly I like 28mm better than 35mm. The purple fringing is surprisingly pronounced when at 1.2 in real work scenarios and not just in extreme situations. The rending is good, but doesn't wow me like the 85mm does. I'm on the fence about keeping it and was super looking forward to this lens.
