It is what one of the major camera manufacturers stated as the reason a few years ago in an interview. To me it makes sense as the Arca-Swiss is just one of many different QR systems on the global market.

Do you know this to be the actual reason Sony's lens feet are not arca compatible, or is it just a theory? Sounds odd to me considering Sigma, Tamron, and Olympus all provide arca-compatible feet with their telephoto lenses.
Having the dovetail edge on a lens foot does not preclude someone attaching a different tripod mounting system to that foot, just as they might with a non-arca foot like a Sony. In fact all the third party feet I use with my Sony lenses are arguably better for that because they have a better profile that the weirdly fat Sony ones.
After I contacted bits-n-bits, they referred me to orbitools.com, which makes custom bits. Rough estimates of the price are $200 to make up a bit and $95 if ordered in lots of 10. Magnesium can be routed just like aluminum, but there is a fire hazard. They will be carbide bits.

What would be nice would be to have a built-in Arca-style foot and then a silicone or rubber cover for it to make it more comfortable to hand hold.
I hope he quickly makes one for the 400-800. A bit spendy, but they look super comfy.
That is different than what I had in mind, which was just a simple cover to soften the edges if holding the foot while shooting. But that grip looks great. What an improvement over a bare foot for holding. Thanks for posting the link as I was not aware of this product.

The Oly 150-400 has both the arca compatible groove and a comfy pad for hand holding. Love it.
Prior to applying the wrap I didn't notice any wear on the finish of the groove.
Then again I don't really use it much on a tripod or monopod - just carry by the foot 95% of the time and handhold.
...and it's listed on the Buy & Sell already. No affiliation, though I do want you guys to buy it and put it through it's paces to see if I actually want one.

I bought one from Buy and Sell. He’s a great seller. I’ll be testing it next week 👍
Congrats, Stuart! So, you will be getting yours before the official release day then?
Talking about the official release day, which is slotted for Friday, March 21, why oh, why does Sony, more than just a few times, release something new on a Friday? Does anybody know in addition to letting the courier keep the package over the weekend?

Thanks Joshua! I hope it arrives Tuesday or Wednesday. There are numerous shore birds here on Hilton Head Island that will make some nice targets, especially if I’m willing to lie on my stomach and be able to get back up 🤪😂.
Since there was a lot of "ink spilled" in the past about poor perfomance of 200-600 with the a7RIV I would be really grateful if someone has the chance to test this lens on the a7RIV to pass on their judgment on usability of said combo
They would need to advertise it to be greenwashing. If not, it's compliance.
Until very recently, the US and EU are the leaders in pushing for sustainable packaging.
I think there is an incredibly small chance that these packaging changes would not stand up to scrutiny regarding their validity. Failing would result in corporate embarrasment and cost.

Ah yes, the old corporate greenwashing. Eco-friendly is one way to describe it. I prefer plain old "cheap"
