p.1 #1 · Elk and the Continental Divide

The photo is taken from Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park between Lava Cliffs and the highest point on the road which is at 12,183 feet. The Continental Divide is in the background. I reporcessed it today to get more out of the foreground.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Lovely image Morris. Using a wide angle you must have been quite close to those boys!!

Not sure if this would work given the cloud on the right of the image and indistinct edges but have you considered a sky replacement in photoshop? An alternative would be to mask the sky in either LR or PS (easier in LR IMHO) and reduce the brightness, deepen the colour in the sky.

Gorgeous and very well composed, Morris!
Don't think any photoshop trick would enhance your image in any way.
Good as is!

Well other than the Elk were not too photo-cooperative with eye contact the image has great depth and feel in it. The foreground is nicely presented, quite a view Morris!!

If I was an Elk, I'd be looking the other way enjoying the view too! I like it Morris, I think it tells a story this way.

Thank you John,

One thought I had was compose and expose fast as that cloud you see on the right was moving in and soon we were in fog

Thank you Jung,
It was an amazing sight to see appear as we came around a bend in the road

Thank you Alan,
I played quite a bit with the sky in the past. It's very tricky to mask. I agree there is room for improvement in the sky

Thank you Paul,
If I keep hacking at it I might be able to make the sky a little nicer. I have everything else just the way I want it.

Thank you Karl,

The elk looked exhausted. There is not a lot of O2 up there. Yes the view was amazing till the cloud on the right moved in

Thank you Catherina,
Yes they have quite a view. I can see why they stopped there to rest

Thank you Eric,

Why would an elk want to look at people when it can look at that stunning view?

Hey Morris, I hear you about masking the sky. That's a tough one.

Have you heard of Matt Kloskowski? He is a LR and PS educator out of Tampa. Superb teacher with inexpensive video series teaching techniques in nice and manageable bite size pieces. His big schtick is masking in LR AND in PS. Some great approaches and ideas about using masking to edit images. This likely doesn't apply to the image in this thread but it is terrific for lots of others. Interested to learn what you think.

Hi Alan,

I know a photographer by the same name yet not the one you are talking about. I'll check him out when I get a chance as I love to learn. Had the cloud not moved in on the right, a ND grad would have worked when I was taking it or the equivalent in post. I'm glad we got there when we did as that cloud turned to fog and the stunning background was gone moments after I took the photo.

Morris: Lovely sight, well shot. The bright sky in the upper left detracts but then you have no control over these matters other than to skillfully crop it out (or use Generative Fill).

Thank you Rajan,

I have not tried Generative Fill yet I'm confident that would work. It would limit my use of the photo so I'll probably keep two versions.

I enjoy this photo, Morris! Middle and far right bull look similar in age, although the far right bull looks slightly older. If that's the case, they are aligned perfectly from young to older. Awesome back drop!
