p.1 #1 · a6700 owner stuck between sigma 30mm f1.4 and Sony 35mm f1.8

I’m a new a6700 owner and currently own a sigma 18-50 f2.8. I want to add a prime to my initial lens collection.

My main goal is for something with a wider aperture for low light which seems like a no brainer to go for the sigma. I’m also video heavy though and the OSS feature + smaller size are huge pluses for me on the Sony.

Here’s my questions:

1) is the built in stabilization on the a6700 good enough that OSS isn’t a massive benefit on stabilization? How much of a benefit does an a6700 user see on OSS lenses?

2) is the low light on the a6700 good enough that the f1.8 should cover me in the lower light scenarios?

I understand this is relative and I’m APS-C so it’s going to be lesser than the full frame sensors of its class. Just trying to get some input on where you’d all lean given what I’m attempting to accomplish. Thanks 🙏🏽

If you are referring to the small OSS version of the Sony 35mm, don't bother. It is inferior to the Sigma in every way.
OSS would be a benefit, but the image quality hit is not worth it.

The Sigma 30mm is a lovely little lens. It would be my choice for the a6700.

These were two of the worst lenses in my APS-C experience. I will assume there are better examples of both of them. I settled on the Zeiss Touit 1.8/32 despite that lens's slow DC AF motor and rudimentary planar optical design, but it was at least manufactured well. The other alternative at the time was the Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN which had issues like not supporting phase-detect AF. It was baffling how much better optically a new $40 manual 35mmm F1.6 was than all of these. This situation was one reason I gave up on APS-C cameras.

Since then there are 7 newer native AF APS-C primes in the 30-35mm range and 18 full-frame native AF 35mm primes. All the full-frame 35mm primes I've used were better on APS-C then the lenses above.

Thanks everyone the appreciate feedback. Seems like the consensus is to avoid the Sony because the sigma is sharper. I’ve also been reading how great the in camera stabilization is so I’ll stick with the sigma and not worry about the lack of OSS.

It's been several years since choosing between them for my A6400 (and now, A6700). I chose the Sigma. I don't recall all the reasons. IIRC, the sigma was reputed to be better optically, at least some, f1.4 v 1.8.

I don't use it often. But that's both because I've tended to use my ff more now that I have it and don't use primes that much, generally preferring my zooms.

I think the 30mm is a tad long as a walk-around/single lens on aps-c and so think I'd be less willing to try single lensing it with the 35mm as it's even less wide.

I recall there being discussions on video suitability in some of the reviews/comparisons. Perhaps that the Sigma focus was "noisier?" I haven't done any video with it so don't know that that is a concern, wasn't for me for stills use. I don't typically work on the edge of "needing" OSS or IBIS so can't give any experience reports on that.

I'm not a great fan of the answers to A or B gear questions giving a "C" instead but for me, I recently added a Samyang 24/1.8. It's FF so is fine on my FF gear, not forcing a crop, or at a 36mm angle of view/crop on the A6700. I would find that a more useful focal length compared to either 30mm or 35mm on aps-c. I would probably find myself more on the recommending the Sigma side in the 30mm vs 35mm choice, but would want to look up the older discussions if making thae choice again to consider video impacts.

The Sony 35/1.8 OSS is IMO not a very good lens. I think the FE 28/2 (which got a lot of hate here in FM) is optically better than it. It's fine for people/pet but I tried using it for streets at night and the results are bad (lots of fringing). I don't think OSS is very effective.
